  here’s a quirky little story for you.  us president barack obama has started a fewpeople talking about the strange way he signed the 750 billion dollar stimulus package.  to the highly unbservant person, obama signs left handed and he hands gets contorted into this strange twisted curl of his wrist.  i never thought too much of it but then you can see he’s definitely curling his wrist.

  to me, the average left hander, when signing or writing, i believe their knuckls are facing about 10 o’clock.  however if you look closely you can see his knuckles are pointing straight forward at the 12 o’clock position.  which even to us righthanders who’s knuckles are closer to 1 o’clock do find it a little weird.

  

  he actually also closes his eyes too when he signs things, which is strange.  cause i was always thought to keep my eyes open when i had to write things down.  especially when i had to sign sheets of paper. but obama is made of magic so i think he could do anything with his eyes closed.

  i don’t know if this is a strange phomenon of obama, or do most left handed people do it to avoid smudging the ink.  i have a few friends who are left handed and to my memory they do not write in such a manner.  i used to remark as a child how i felt it was strange that they would write with theirs left handed not knowing that there are people in this world who write left handed.  but i never felt it to be as unique as president obama’s

  this was also an excuse for me to put up waaay too many photos of obama.  i’m alright with the way he signs i guess, but jeannie moos always has a great way to telling the quirkier stories on cnn.  check it out

  Starbucks Gonna Try Instant Coffee

  it’s no secret the recession has hit everyone pretty hard.  no industry here in hong kong and around the world is immune from the effects of the economic downturn, except for maybe karaoke.  karaoke always does well.  however, big companies are laying people off, losing money and some are even going bankrupt.  which is no surprise that a even a global conglomerate like starbucks is also taking a huge hit.  i always thought that people loved to pay for over priced sub quality coffee they could make better at home… sad facit is, i know i did and so do you.

  starbucks has been hit pretty hard, and noone feels it more than their stores and the staff. since the downturn, over 7000 staff have been given their marching orders and over 300 stores have closed.  that is pretty close to the amount of starbucks stores we have just in central alone.

  so any company in trouble would try their best to avoid going down.  like a football team making a specific signing to boost their defence or adding a striker so they can win games and avoid relegation, starbucks has a super sub for their troubles:  instant coffee.

  yes you read that right.  instant coffee.  now in my sudden geek excitement, i thought that they had specific machines that produced each order instantly.  as in, lets say someone orders a grande chai tea latte.  they will walk up to some machine push a button, and boom,  grande chai tea latte instantly.  but that was me being naive and thinking too far (thought that would be cool).  they are actually selling packets of instant coffee. so that you can go home and make the same crap coffee at home for a fraction of the price of buying it at the store.

  now i know most of you will argue that it’s the experience of starbucks that is popular and non necesarrily the coffee.  i for one drink the tea there only (cause tea is hard to screw up), but there is something about having a good drink and a good setting. so the question is, would you want to experience sub standard coffee at their stores, or at home?

  will this work? CEO Howard Shultz obviously thinks so, but i am pretty sure that most people would disagree with this idea.  would you wanna be sitting at home, drinking instant coffee made from a starbucks sachet?  The bottled frappecino didn’t seem to do incredibly well when they were sold in stores and supermarkets. i think 7-11 in Hong Kong is styll trying to sell their first issues of bottles (it tasted neither frozen nor like a frappecino)

  next thing you’re gonna tell me is that starbucks are going to do breakfast combos to steal people from mcdonalds. uh wait a second, i spoke too soon.

  i’ll leave the discussion up to you.  my verdict, the novelty of it will fly for a few weeks where some people who are way too lazy to go out for that starbucks taste. but i don’t think it is going to be a hit. i avoided the use of a cheesy joke by not inserting the word instant there but it was highly tempting.

  it is often that things from my childhood that i hold dear gets lost or destroyed.  because of an oversight, or my mom throwing something away, or an untimely fire that kill our home when i was a kid.  but that’s another story.

  however, in the recent years, my fear of hollywood destroying things from my childhood have slowly dwindled.  spiderman, batman, and now transformers have made sure that they were intact, and also have showed me what i have always wanted to see.  robots kicking butt in a current setting. which brings me to this totally awesome trailer for the new transformer movie coming out june 24, 2009.

• Going Solo

  Very soon This Music Studio in Central will be opening its doors full time. Since it opened in February 2006, it has been a personal passion project of mine which I have rented to a number of people on the side, loaned out for a few recordings, and has served as a place for me to teach drums and practice.

  Now, I am ready to take the place full time and develop this studio to hopefully reach the potential that it has, to be a full blown working studio.

  Over the years, I have met hundreds of musicians and people within the music/arts circle who have been absolutely stellar and been kind enough to grace the studio’s walls. They have brought class and awesomeness to the place and given it a stature beyond my wildest dreams. As I look to go forward to the next phase of this studio. I hope that you are all around and will join me for the ride.

  This Music Studio has been on a long journey, and one that really is just officially beginning. Starting March 9, This Music Studio will open its doors full time for business. I hope that you will come over to visit and hang out with me, and just chat about music and see just what we might be capable of.

  Hopefully I will start seeing you guys more often than before

• Liam Neeson Taken

   i mentioned this movie’s reivew by some others in a previous post,  but however i just want to highlight this brilliant film myself.  by no means is this a complicated thiller.  it’s about an ex special forces operative who’s daughter is kidnapped by some smugglers/traffickers at a paris airport. ok that is simple enough right?  straight forward and simple because that pretty much is it.

  this movie uses the same approach that films like bourne and the new bond films have used, the shaky action cam.  the use of the handheld camera instead of a steady cam, ensures that you can feel the fights and experience it more.  and this movie, uses it to it’s advantage.  some films, like the recent quantum of solace used it to a point where it annoys you but here it is just enough to ad to the film.

  the movie takes a little bit of time setting up the characters, a full 25 minutes.  but once it hits that point the movie never lets up, and you just know that liam neeson is gonna just leave a bunch of people destroyed behind him.  there is a moment, when he realises that his daughter is in danger a switch turns on.  and it is just awesome.

  liam neeson is 52 according to imdb, but he is in fine form in this film.  he looks sharp, and hits every fight scene with control and ease.  if you like action, then go watch it. if you’re looking for a compelling and dramatic story, there might be 30 seconds of that.  there are so many quotable moments, and just many “holy crap” moments. it’s a great film watch it when it comes out or if it’s out in your country already.
