  • Coloring my painstaking crappy lazy way

So usually when I finish a coloring I just put it up and put up a quick gif animation that shows most of the steps.  But I guess with seeing so many tutorials being put up lately I thought I'd try my shot at something similar.  Well guess it's more like explanations on the steps rather than a tutorial but whatever hope you all enjoy.

    Step 1.

Find a nice black and white drawing you feel like coloring.  I prefer my pictures to be inked...when it's pencil my colors look ugly as heck on them, inks for some reason cover up a lot of my short comings I guess heh.

Open in photoshop, and duplicate the layer, trash the original background layer (since you can't really alter the original background layer and it gets complicated.  Set the new duped layer to multiply and you get an image that looks exactly the same as it did before...wooo nifty heh.

    Step 2. Flats.
Flatting is annoying as hell heh.  Generally after I finish flatting I don't even feel like starting on the actual colors because it takes so long.  This is only a one character picture and look how long it'll take.

Then after you get all the different aspects of the girl done, it looks like that...flat colors with no depth...hence the name Flats. ^_^

    Step 3. Shading

Lay down a nice gray scale color.  The best part about flats is that if you do it on its own layer, you can select the character, or section of the character you want with the magic wand tool...yep pretty tricky huh? no? ok...well next...

Tada using multiply and screen with a medium grey color soft brush you paint the shades on...uh compared to some people I'm not that great at this yet...but workin on it heh.

Step 4.  Turning shades into color shades...or something
Uh for this part, I'm still experimenting and trying to figure out the best way to do it.  Right now I think I take the sections based on their primary colors, Red, Blu, Yellow and then use Hue Saturation (ctrl+U) to try and make the black and white shades have colors.

Now all the black and white shades have color to them, I also set their layer properties to multiply so that when you set this layer, with it's new colorful mode, over the original flats it'll end up like...

    This... Yep ok...next.

    Step 5. Background
I'm lazy when it comes to plain backgrounds.  Well sometimes I'm lazy when it comes to intense backgrounds too.  Usually by this point I've spent way too long on the characters and have to go do other things so I kinda rush the backgrounds.  It's something I really want to focus more on later...someday...anyway.

So first thing first, set down some flats for the background color itself.  Try to figure out what kinda mood the background should etc...uh I figure forest = green...so dark green it is.  I was afraid the background green would blend too much with her clothes though...=\

This tree is pretty big so I figure I might as well not be too lazy with it and give it some flats of it's own and some detailed shading, unlike the rest of the background which is just a bunch of trial and error streaks and colors to try and make it look good...

Backgrounds done time for the next step.  Unfortunately my photoshop...er laptop itself I guess sucks.  So it kept crashing on me while doing this picture.  In the end the file got corrupted and that's why that weird color is on the left tree branch.  Generally a good idea is to save often, but also save to a new file everytime you save.  Keeping like 3-4 backups of each piece.  So something like archer_girl_010509_1159pm.psd; archer_girl_010609_1205am.psd; archer_girl_010609_1230am.psd etc.  One of my teachers taught me that for 3D  modelling because 3D models tend to get corrupted easily I guess.  Anyway I didn't do that...so my file got corrupted...I didn't feel like going back and redoing the tree so I just left it...-_-

    Step 6. Extras

So add in the reflected light shining on the character and background...(shh I actually forgot to put it on the background...but don't pay attention to that heh).  Uh after the reflected light you can add whatever other effects you want.  I added some shine to the metal and glass stuff she has on her to make them stand out a little more...and that's about it.

Step 7 Finish and go start a new pic.
    Finish...

    The end.

    P.S. Don't forget
    pencils by I dunno who
    Inks by Ernest J.
    Colors by Me.

So the design of the drawing has nothing to do with me heh. ^_^...

    -_- zzZZZ

That's quite an intensive process.  Nice results though.   Be able to work in layers has to be one of the best things about PS.
