  Writing novels, and for literary competitions, that is great!  Since I don't read Chinese (at least not for several more years--I'm just beginning to learn) I won't be able to read your work.  That is a shame for I'm sure, having traveled and seen so much of the world, you have a keen eye for people and situations.  
  
  I was watching a Hong Kong film last night that had a literary quality, which was quite different from so many of the Hong Kong films I have seen.  It was an Ann Hui film from 2001 with Jacky Cheung and Anita Mui.  The English title was "July Rhapsody", but the Chinese title (which just about exhausts my knowledge of Chinese characters) translates as "Man Forty).  Jacky Cheung plays a professor of Chinese literature in a private secondary school in Hong Kong who loves Chinese poetry.  The leitmotif that keeps coming back through out the film is classic Chinese poetry and especially the poem by Su Shih about boating below Red Cliff (which I just happened to already know--in an English translation).  Dramatically, it wasn't the most dynamic film (it is an Ann Hui film, after all), but the the way literature was woven into the script and into the lives of the two main protagonists was quite interesting.  The film was also making the point of the lack of literature in the lives of the younger generation in Hong Kong.  It is a film that I would recommend for these reasons, not necessarily for the quality of the film itself.
  
  Keep in touch when you can.  Having to travel so much for work, while interesting, can also be very tiring and time-consuming.  I am glad to hear to you have reached a state of greater calmness and equilibrium.  When very tragic things happen to our world, it can take some time to re-establish that balance.  After 9/11, I was grief stricken for weeks.  I couldn't talk about it with anyone, except my husband.  I couldn't listen to music, except for a single composer from the Middle Ages, and I couldn't read.  All I could do to express my grief was to work in my garden, down on my hands and knees with my hands buried in the dirt.  That very primal contact with the earth, the source of all life on this planet, was the only source of comfort.  Some days it felt like I was drawing the power of life up out of the ground by my hands as they dug in the dirt.  It does get better with time.  But we are connected to life on this planet and, when something cataclysmic occurs, we are very naturally disturbed at our core.  If we were not, then we would be cut off from those we share life with on the planet, and that is the source of all violence and hatred between people.

  Kenneth, thanks for the comment.  Yes, I care deeply about art.  I have a Ph.D. in art history, though I have not pursued a full-time career in that field.  I have some friends involved in the arts (visual, music, radio and television) in different parts of the world.  So, I am extremely interested in the arts.  I am also a writer (though only published on the internet).

  I enjoyed reading your blog.  Maybe only you could make working with super models in freezing, freezing temperatures sound fun!  I guess that attitude is why you're still in the business.  
  
  I like in your profile where you say you like spending money on travel, books, food and movies.  I understand completely.  But what about art or artifacts for the home?  I don't buy art often (and then it is folk art--all my budget can afford), but when I do I love how it transforms not only the energy of the room I put it in, but the overall energy of the entire house.  The best purchase I ever made was a lovely painting of Krishna and the Gopis from India.  I looked for a painting in this specific Indian folk style for a special place in my living room for 5 years! before I found just the right one.  When I put it on the wall, the room finally felt complete.  It was worth searching all those years for just the right piece of art.
