  • 10 years and still here breathing Hong Kong...it's in our hearts and pumps through our veins. We are a Hong Kong band and proud to be from this city. Then why do we always talk about problems here? Because we want our beautiful home to be the best it can be...nothing wrong with that.

    How's it going?

Been awhile since I've updated this page and realized that I probably should type a little something here. The good thing about this site is that I don't have to worry about typing in two languages. I always have to do that on our website...the good thing about doing that is that I get to practice my Chinese writing skills. I always get my grammar wrong and plus I don't use Cantonese writing but Mandarin writing so my grammar is even more messed up. We get more hits from Mainland China then Hong Kong so it is definitely worth the extra effort I put in to writing and rewriting my blogs on our main website.

Anyway, as is the curse of the Ly Chee, another band member has bit the dust. It seemed about right. The 2 year mark was coming up and so, as history has proven over and over, it was about time for the stars to align again and give someone in this band some sort of feeling that the best thing for them to do with their lives is to quit KLC. This time, as shocking as it is for us in the band, and even more so for people who aren't in it, our sister G decided last Friday to leave the band.

So we're right back where we are right before she joined the band when our singer at the time decided to leave KLC after being with us for 6 years.

I'm almost tired of taking band photos. What's the point really? I think that's it for band photos.

Anyway...we have no idea when we'll start the recruiting process for a new singer. We have no idea where to start. There's been talk that maybe I should stop playing guitar and just sing. That would suck big time for a number of reasons:

    1. I've been playing guitar since I was 9...that thing is as much a part of me as the hands/fingers that I use to strum that thing...
    2. I'm too nuts on stage as it is with a guitar, imagine me without it? Fuck - I wouldn't last more than like 2 songs

We'll get through this...I know we will...it just blows that there never seems to be a consistent line-up, and I'm way to stubborn of a Scorpio to ever end this band. It won't end that's for sure.

We have 2 shows coming up...that's just the way we roll. Someone leaves the band? That ain't stopping us or holding us back from things that we've promised to do. We promised to play these shows and so we're going to uphold our promises to these organizers and play. Even if it means just one of us is going to get on stage and sing Karaoke versions of King Ly Chee songs - that's what's going to happen. Yes, it would suck.

Anyway, at these shows brothers from fellow Hong Kong bands have stepped up and volunteered their hearts and time.

    On Mar 21:
We're playing at the Lamma Island Ferry Pier #4 with HORSE THE BAND (from the US) and at this show our brothers Terence (Shepherds the Weak) and Tai (Embryo) will step up to help sing some of our songs. We will still play some songs just the 4 of us...old songs.

    On Mar 22:
We're going up to Guangzhou. The organizer for this show is so scared that we're going to cancel and I told her, no matter what happens, we WILL be there to play. So our good friend Benny (Mensheng) is going to take the time out of his life to actually come with us up to Guangzhou and play this show! That's crazy that he's willing to do that...

    So there you have it...

Another day, another year in the life of King Ly Chee with all it's troubles...

    Peace
    Riz

Thanks everyone - yeah we're not giving up. We've been through this many times before and have always come out of it fine. If you do know of any singers who are into hardcore/metal then please let them know to contact us any time. We should start looking at new people soon. Just waiting to get through these last couple of shows...

    Thanks everyone!

I've not heard of your stuff properly yet Riz nor am I a singer/songwriter but I do understand one thing. From the looks of things at the moment you could be suffering from burnout - 'I'm almost tired of taking band photos. What's the point really? I think that's it for band photos. '

The saying goes 'If you keep doing the same thing over and over, you will keep getting the same results'. Sometimes in life I find its good and important to step back a bit at times to assess what is it that you have achieved or want to achieve, and then go back and redo things in a different manner. Because you could be overstressing yourself in the current time, and possibly closing your creative side due to the fact you've already lost one member. And having to start all over again, it may not be to your benefit.

I am in no way asking you to quit whatever it is you do as you have to make a living - but as an AnD member just want to offer you some help from an outsiders point of view. By stepping back a bit and re-examining the situation - even taking a long break to think things over - you would find it probably refreshing to see things from another angle. For example instead of singing, you could work as an acoustic guitarist. Or maybe during the break, come up with new material/songs.

I have a relative in my family who formed his own band many years ago. He liked keyboard and guitar from a young age, as well as performing on stage. So much so in his 20s he began touring worldwide with Johnny 'Rotten' from the Sex Pistols as one of the lead guitarists. On his own he even did scores for theatrical plays to large audiences and even on TV for the Chinese Channel in England. Now in his later years he helps produce music instead working alongside veteran colleagues.
As he told me himself its a big effort to maintain a band because you are always looking to perform/write new material. But if you have the experience in the industry you can use it in other ways e.g. there's probably other young bands who may need your help.

Good luck with your tours anyhow and hope you find what you are looking for.

    I can't believe that, Riz.
We know you will solve it, however.
Keep it up with great music and big heart.

    See you soon
