A Canadian athlete, Mark Ryan,  stole the show in the 10-kilometer men's race, winning with an unofficial time of 33 minutes 40 seconds.

Mark Ryan, 26, tore off his T-shirt in triumph as he crossed the finishing line with a clear lead.

Ryan, who was the center of attention after the race, said he was happy to claim the first honor of the day.

"The lead pack wanted to go really slowly at the beginning for some reason," Ryan said, "and I decided to pick things up at around six kilometers."

Ryan is an English teacher who relocated toHong Kong in 2006.

He was hooked on running after winning his first track meet in Ontario at the age of 12.

His personal best is 31 minutes 45 seconds at the University of Ottawa in 2006.

He said he had a two-year break from running and has just returned to the sport.

Ryan is now hoping for a repeat performance next year.

"I hope whoever is the record holder in Hong Kong will come [to next year's race] so I can race against him," Ryan said.
