This is interesting.  I like your prose and story telling style.  I mean I really like it.  Also being an African American from the south (my father is from Mississippi and I'm from North Carolina), I'm really curious how you plan to transport us into this black southern experience...and beyond that, what larger story do you plan to tell about life, family, etc.  Or perhaps you started the literary trip on a whim and now have us hooked?  

I will, however, have to annoy you a bit.  The historian (of American black history to be exact) in me is kicking in and I just wanted to note a couple of things.  I do this because I think you have a good start on a story worth publishing.  If you don't plan to do this and you are stretching your writing muscles, then ignore the historical notations below.

Carver:  Common belief that George Washington discovered or created peanut butter, but he actually did not.  He did create over 300 uses of it including: peanut dye, peanut meal, peanut cake, peanut oil, peanut shampoo, peanut wafers, peanut milk, and butter made from peanut milk.  But no peanut butter.  Ain't that crazy?  All of that and you would have thought peanut butter was pretty simple to create....lol  but it was already out there.

1940s-50s South: For African Americans this is a period of segregation, and also massive violence.  There were many returning black soldiers who faced attacks and a few were lynched.  His inability to obtain a job is not just disability, he's black and that means something about your life existence economically, socially, politically.  It also speaks to why this character is angry.  If Midland is agriculturally based - then most black residents are farm workers and there are few if any options outside these parameters ....making it a double blow.  No job but farming, and disabled so cant even farm.  Also given that it's the 1940s/1950s, efforts to vote and gain equality in other ways are met with violence and thus may also be a cause for the harshness of this character.  Not every black person has a picket sign, of course, but a lot of veterans formed the base of the 1960s civil rights movement.

Jackie Robinson:  Called up to the majors in 1947, which makes your young boy a fan of this baseball player during the 1950s, quite possibly into the early 1960s.  I am really curious to see where you take this story given the time frame, since it's a pivotal period in black history...

OK, now you are saying... I did not ask your opinion.  No you did not.  But I like the story and I'd like to watch where it goes.  Thus, I hope you are not offended.  As a writer, I can be sensitive and sometimes annoyed about unsolicited critiques.... so I suggest you use it for whatever its worth to you.

To be continued....I would definitely read it til' the end...your mom's family was lucky that they all migrated to the south, some families (as Ive seen on TV) were separated because of the Korean war.  As I read your blogs...I can definitely say that your mom is a strong woman and I salute her for that....
