  • Never in my dreams as a little child did I ever think I would come to live, work and play in Hong Kong. Born in Canada to Chinese parents, I moved here in 1994 and worked as an architect for 4 years before pursuing my greater interest in photography and art. Having published my second book themed and titled \'The Asian Male\', I\'m set to continue and explore all things that make this Universe as diverse and interesting as it is.

It is wonderful to hear such glowing comments on the artwork, something so refreshing to hear, as most people do not know me by this work (but moreso my photography of Asian men). Aeon, the 20 minute painting, was with me for only a few months, before it was purchased by a buyer. It is one of my favorite pieces, and didn't have enough time to absorb it's energy. I remember putting small details on the painting at the very last minutes, like a small thick cross, in a subtle shade of cream different than the base white color. Unfortunately, it can't be seen here on this photograph.

20 mins or not that is no "happy accident". It's beautiful and even more so that it came to you at this point in your life.

I can't believe this took you 20 minutes, or as you say 40 years and 20 minutes.  Your wonderful eye as a photographer has opened a new realm of  astounding work for us to enjoy.

You are full of surprises, Norm!  From your photography, I would never have guessed what a gift you have for painting.  (You don't have to explain to me about the "stillborn children" that you never show to anyone; I have reams of poetry that no one will ever see).

I really like your color field works that recall Stella and Frankenthaller (sp?).  Other favs are "Windows of memory", "Desire", and "The three divinities".  These are such evocative names that fit the pictures so well.  Do you have a subject emotion in mind when you paint, or do you name the paintings as the last step?

Much like music, I think abstract pictures aren't about anything concrete, though they most certainly can evoke concrete emotions.  But mostly they are about the pure pleasure of experiencing the world in a different way from our ordinary consciousness, more direct, less mediated by everyday mind.

I hope I have the opportunity to see these marvelous works in person some day.  No matter how good the photograph, it can never do justice to a large-scale painting.  At worst, a photograph of a painting is a visual record somewhat akin to a photocopy, at best, the photograph takes on a life of its own apart from the original work of art and becomes an art work in its own right.  Then we are talking about something else altogether.

As always, your work provides much food for thought, reflection and daydreaming.  Good stuff!
