  • Never in my dreams as a little child did I ever think I would come to live, work and play in Hong Kong. Born in Canada to Chinese parents, I moved here in 1994 and worked as an architect for 4 years before pursuing my greater interest in photography and art. Having published my second book themed and titled \'The Asian Male\', I\'m set to continue and explore all things that make this Universe as diverse and interesting as it is.

i have been thinking about this world of blogging and it's meaning, it's usefulness and it's authenticity to the realness and truthfulness of the individual. it used to be that a diary (or journal) was written in privacy, in secrecy. no one got to it with the exception of the person who wrote it. it was meant for recording the feelings and emotions of the person that day, so that years later, one could recount the past. it was not held for public viewing. writing such daily thoughts would help clarify my ideas of who i was, where i wanted to go in life, my boyhood fantasies and love and hate interests. it was sort of self edification, a way of cleansing and purifying one's self without having to go to confession. if i write it down, it would keep me arms away from hell's gate, but i'd never be pushed inside, cause i confessed in the diary. read it and weep. when the internet first made it's way to my bedroom, i started writing my 'diary' in old html fashion. it was not called a 'blog'. i wrote about my pain, my struggles, my desire, the loss of my brother, and the n my father in those first few years. it was not meant for public viewing, and i never envisioned a real audience in front of those words. never. i have been thinking greatly about the power of the blog nowadays, but feel that in some ways, the authenticity of my writing has been somewhat commercialized and bastardized by my idea of selling myself, because after all, blogs now have audiences. i will say with all truthfulness that getting an audience gives me a high, but then i somehow want to keep all the really bad feelings inside. so i was thinking today that i should buy a notebook (the paper kind) to document my inner thought of where i want to go and what i want to achieve in life. i never used to think of the future, always living for the moment, after all, this is the way of the Buddha....

I still keep a physical journal actually, like a book that i can draw, write in different language, different color and different pressure, sometimes I put a flower in between, and a few pages after I could find a dry leaves from somewhere... [sounds like a children's game, and it's a bit disorganized but I think we all needed it...] the book is so personal that all the writing inside dont need any respond, reply, no fellow up, it's just for record, no collective memories.

The blog, is for something that "I THINK" that people can share.... "soft promotion" some of my friends would said it from a business point of view. "eye candy" in the context of "popular culture"...

hi kit, actually, the personal journal now is lost i feel in the world of the internet. the only way it could become a true personal journey of emotionals and struggles is to type your journal on a computer that does not have internet connection. hey, maybe that is going to be the next best thing. wow, writing on a computerized typewriter that has no connection to the outside world, so where really your truest thoughts really remain hidden from the outside world. something that is YOURS.

I agree that there are some really personal things that you don't want anyone to read, you just want to write it down, maybe to express it, maybe to reflect on it in later times. You could still keep a diary of the really personal things. But people have found blogging really therapeutic. I find it good to express my everyday feelings, but there are many things I would never write in a blog. But I don't keep a diary either.

Research has found that people who keep a diary, even if it's just a dayplanner, are unhappier than those who don't. Those who go back and read what they've written are even more unhappier. I wonder if the same applies to blogs.

This is a bit of a thorny problem. I discovered jetli.com about a year ago & that's where I spend the majority of my 'posting' life'.I most assuredly make a distinction between this virtual likfe we have here on the internet and 'rl' aka 'real life', They are two different entities in my mind & when I do my writing in my blog I keep this always in mind, tho to the casual observer it might not seem like it because I oi share a lot of things about my life & job.

It's what's left out that's the key for me, and I make careful choices about that. This is where I believe each person must find this balance for themselves, and it sounds like this is the crux of you dilemma right now. A couple of suggestions as you proceed, the number one being 'when in doubt, leave it out'. The second would be to use your pen & paper to the fullest to pour out you innermost thoughts & feelings, just make sure it is locked & marked 'private' & put away in a discreet place. Can't do much more than that to ensure the privacy of your words, and anyone who would proceed past those warnings/requests is a real asshole imo.

The other important thing is to venture out into the world of people's blogs to get a feel for what is written. This may give you some ideas for the wat you want your to be organized. Just clicl om anyones headshot (picture) & it takes you to their personal section, Click on 'Profile" to read their blogs. Good luck; it's not the easiest decision but it's not the hardest, either. IMO it's all about the balance that feels right for each person, :)

I started to blog in order to share my life with my friends from jetli.com. So I also write about some deeper thoughts and personal problems, but I don't write about everything in my life. Unlike you I cannot write about my job which is a very important part of my life but mostly strictly confidential...
It also helps me to free my mind, which would be the primary intention for me to write a diary - but somehow I stick to the electronic version ;)
Sometimes I tend to commercialise my blog as well because you know what your "audience" like to read...

i mostly blog about my happy events in AnD...yeah u can say that it's commercializing... in a good way, just sharing happy moments around the globe...that sounded just so hypocritical!
anyway, i do blog about my feelings over at friendster, not recently tho...maybe cuz i've been happy! =)
the reason why we blog is probably somewhere within our inner-selves, we are trying to get some attention, and probably some advise & support from others...no diary is safe unless u burn them...that's what i think!

I hope you're not misunderstanding me, Norm....I'm just saying that whatever you write down, either on paper or electronic, may not be for your very own private use.  If you're willing to accept that someday somebody else might read what you wrote and you're okay with that, then fine...write it down!

But if, for instance, you write down an elaborate plot to rule the world, then you might be in trouble later on down the line (negative consequences).

A person must acknowledge and accept responsibility for their writings....that's really it in a nutshell!

Hey... so we have our real lives and our blogging lives. Actually, now I have a dual-blogging life because i have public posts and I also have private friends-only posts.

BTW, don't discount "Mean Girls". It's quite a good movie  -- was well-reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes and is by the fantastically smart and funny Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock.

I have some deep feelings and thoughts into what I write.  But more like a code, something secret for me to understand when I go back to read it.  Keep that paper and pen with you, my sister does it and she has figured things out to better herself and continue in her dream to do photography.

well, the blogs are good for sharing with others.  you can also do friends only blog entries, which would have a much smaller audience...

a 21 year old friend was determined that i see this teen movie called 'mean girsl', so we had a dvd date to get the low-down on the true-to-life meanies of school life. i agree that such writings as a 'burn book' can have devastating effects on the people close around you. but i disagree with to JRS that writing person thoughts and feelings, although per se negative, is a bad thing, and that it will come to haunt you. writing to please others is fine, but here are deeper, spiritual goals in me that need to be addressed. my artistic effort allow for a part of it, but it hardly suffices to have someone just criticize my work to make life meaningful. perhaps this blogging is really just about sharing (our thoughts, our dreams and desires, our pitfalls, our creations), where before, there was no one to listen. and although i will continue to blog, the paper and pen still seems tempting...

but you guys...thanks for taking the energy to write back to illuminate me on your thoughts...

very true.  people definitely feel the motivation to 'sex up'  their blogs because they know other people will be reading.  also there's the motivation to get your camera out anything time you see something cool, thinking 'this will be good for my blog!'  :-P

(and for sure I leave the really important stuff out...  )

I agree with what you've said. With a blog there's an audience so I don't write about some of my deeper things. I don't keep a journal/diary though...it's all in my head.

I think with blogs, the reason we keep blogging on a regular basis is the fact that we have an audience reading  them.  In some way, I feel that I write blogs for others and journals for myself...

I've never ever been able to keep a diary for more than a week in my life.  I get bored writing to myself.

That's why I like blogging!  It challenges me to find something interesting and funny to share with my audience.  I prefer to write for the pure joy of entertaining others and hopefully bringing a smile to their face.  If I can spread happiness, then I am happy.

Now, even if one is good at keeping a diary, they must always keep in mind that their audience is never going to be just themselves.  Once something is written down (on paper or electronically), the world is the potential audience whether or not that is the writer's intention.  So, if there's something that is so sensitive that it would cause damage, then don't write it down because eventially it will be seen.  Oh, heed my warning!!!

Beautifully speaking my true thoughts...I totally "commercialize and bastardize" my blogs, I don't reveal the unpleasant and painful aspects of my life. I only posted one once, and the only person that read it was P - which even still now makes me feel uncomfortable.

When I told my high school English teacher that I was going to major in English she told me to keep paper and pen with me at all times...I agree I think I need to as well...I always avoided diaries b/c my mother used to read my sister's and I've just always bottled everything up....which proved disastrous Sunday night when a family fight triggered a complete breakdown...

    *hugs*
