As a white Irish American I'm not sure if I can even comment, but I have had to deal with ignorant and offensive jokes. ex. an Irish person can't pass a bar....meaning all Irish are drunks. Also being a women and blonde, the list of jokes goes on and on (and on because I don't get them the first time I hear them hehehe). But I just wanted to share my thoughts.
My opinion is that racism, prejudice, and ignorance have to be addressed.  While I have rarely been offended by the jokes I hear about women, the Irish, and blondes, and usually find them funny to be honest; I also feel that that is my sense of humor and not that of all Irish, blonde, or women in the world. And if my friend, or anyone for that matter, finds its offensive or hurtful I completely respect that and would speak up about it.
What people need to realize is that the world is full of individuals of every race, religion, age group, weight, and sex; not Asians, Africans, Europeans, etc. While I may find a joke about blondes funny, I wouldn't get angry at someone who got offended. I've never really told jokes that are about a particular group because I wouldn't want to hurt one person's feelings for a laugh. And when I hear something that I think could be considered offensive I say something about it.
I consider myself very fortunate that I have a circle of friends that includes every race, religion, age group, weight, and sex. Because of that I have seen everyone of them hurt by something that someone else has said. Also I'm an adult now, but I know I said and did things as a kid that were hurtful and had the same done to me which is another reason why I understand the hurt it causes. That is one of the many advantages of maturing.
Miley is a kid, yes with all the immaturity that goes with it (though 16), and may not know that something like that is considered offensive; but she is not a normal 16 yr old. She is a famous actor/singer who has a fan base of mostly preteens. She also achieved her fame through the miracle of the Internet and cable, so she knows how fast the Internet spreads information. Add to that this is the 2nd picture to somehow find its way to the Internet.
After the first incident I'm sure that her "people" explained to her all the dangers of having photos taken and how to behave when there is any possibility of pictures being taken. Even if her people didn't, she does have parents who should tell her all this. So I do feel she should suffer the repercussions of this photo. A law suit for $ 4 billion I think is overboard, but again I don't feel I have any right to comment on it.
All that aside I also blame the person who gave this picture to the press. I just read a great article in my local paper about this and I'm putting it in my blog (eventually hehe). But it basically says that the anonymous source has gotten out of control. No matter who you are you have some right to privacy, and I'm sure that we have all done something at some point in our lives that would humiliate or destroy us publicly. The fact that someone can sell a picture which damages your career and shatters the children who look up to that person should be held responsible as well. It scares the heck out of me to think that someone could have a picture of me and sell it 10 yrs from now and they don't have to be held accountable. This does not take away from bad thing the person did, but I'm sure they weren't doing it thinking, "this is going to be all over the net by tomorrow".
So while I think that there should be consequences for Miley's actions; we have to address the people who are starting, perpetuating, feeding, and benefiting from all this.

ya, actually, i think it's way blown out of proportion myself.  i don't even find it that offensive.  usually when i see racists, i just assume that they are less well educated.  that being said, who doesn't have some stereotypical notion of other races or demographic groups?

the last thing i wondered was ... how many pics did they take?  if this was like 1 out of 50 pics of them making all sorts of faces, it's not as bad.  we don't know the context of the situation.  what if it was the asian dude's (bad) idea?

lawsuit... So why isn't this same person suing that basketball team because of their Olympic photo? Oh, that's right, they don't have money.

Well, if they want to be laughed out of court and waste our precious judicial system's time, then that's up to them, but they make rational Asian Ams look like fools more than some ignorant, whitebread celebrity... Seriously, some people just need to chill and understand that there are more important issues to be fighting rather than trying to attract the wrong kind of attention like this...

I mean this respectfully when I say that as a non-asian, I didn't realize either that it would taken offensive.  You can only stretch your face in so many weird ways when making silly faces.  However, I'm glad you put this, cause I'd rather know than in my ignorance make a mistake like she did and risking offending my friends...

I think if the purpose of the lawsuit is to make a statement... well, that is fine.  It's just a bit much in my opinion and I think the amount they are asking for is ridiculous ($4 billion).  I think there are other ways to get the message across.
