• Cinderella Re-Run

  After the first show,  the company asked if I'd do another and this time to Direct.
  
  I was hesitant at first to do another Cinderella show as I can only take so much "Disney" and for kid stuff at a time, but then I was told that the school we'd be performing for doesn't mind us changing things up. There only criteria other then keep it entertaining and speak good English was that the audience members would be older.
  
  A co-teacher and friend of mine Ben Eppel from Australia and Venezuela an incredible actor himself said he'd be part of the show if I was the one directing it.  I asked him if he'd help Assistant Direct and we began.

  Ben told me he didn't like all the singing and dancing and typical fairytaling and wanted to change the script.  I agreed but told him I wanted to keep the Disney fairytale aspect as it was what the kids probably knew, but I too wanted to modernize it. 
  
  After a little discussion we jot down ideas for what we were going to do.  We took out The Cat character, made the mouses real actors, and added a Neighbor like one you'd see in Shum Shui Po, turned the Fairy Godmother into a Fairy Godfather, and changed Gary the Guard to Gary the Secret Service Guard and other things! 
  
  I told Ben I'd have the script done in one night as I was excited to see what I could come up with based on our ideas. The script from the first show was alright and was a great foundation, but I always felt we didn't get to really feel anything honest towards the characters.  Each one of them had to have a life living of their own.  Even if it was shown for a short while on the stage.
  
  Some of the actors from the previous show returned and some didn't...but we also got great casts some who had lots of experience and were excited to do it because of how it was written-which always is a terrific sign!

  Ben sits down to try the shoe.  He played the Neighbor, Old Lady, and The Fairy Godfather
  
  
  Amy Tam, has always had the greatest qualities for Cinderella
  
  
  It's just great when you see great chemistry between actors, they always got
  along even when they weren't in character.  And they listen. Haha!
  
  
  
  
  Of course we had our fair share of problems but they were minor this time and mainly they
  were things that were out of Ben and my control.  In the end I am always reminded of the saying,
  from Shakespeare in Love. 
  
  
  "The show must..."
  
  "Go-on!"
  
  

  
  
  On the way to the show...that's Meike she's both tough and sweet as The Stepmother and Frances Ng who saved our butts with the music cues.
  
  
  
  First breakfast...in the morning where else can you go but Mcds!
  
  Ben's a health maniac and always tells me, "it doesn't matter what you get into you, just get something in you right away!"
  
  He's right.

  For the curtain call I had us end in a dance to the song "What is Love" by Haadaway
  
  Yea, it was super cheesy and a bit retro but it was at the heart of what I wanted
  this production to be all about - "music, dance, fun, life, drama, fantasy, kung fu, and happiness."

  I've never had so much fun on a production from start to finish and the best part is everything that Ben and I set out to accomplish we had and more.
