  • Racist Desperate Housewives?

On last week's episode of "Desperate Housewives," Susan's (Terri Hatcher) gynecologist tells her that she might be hitting menopause. Susan replies:

"Can I just check those diplomas? Because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines."

Does Hatcher's comment denigrate the contributions of Filipino American medical professionals? You be the judge:

It's true that every race and nationality  gets taken the mickey out of at some point, and it's hard to distinguish between a joke and insult. I think the script-writer for this was a little insensitive and not very aware about the Phillipines medical facilities, I personally thought it was bad taste and not very comical either.

by the way, would it still be racist if she had said a European country such as Hungary or Russia, where most of the people are white?

Think about it. You might say yes, but if she had of said a country like that, would anyone have even noticed or cared?

do a lot of shifty medical practices go on in the Phillipines? Are there any reports of them?

If so, then I agree with the script.

If not, I think it may have been a tiny bit out of line (but look at Chappelle's show, he got away with racism all the time, same with Carlos Mencia.)

Also, when people with degrees from other countries come to the USA their degrees mean NOTHING. Had a friend who's dad had an advertising degree, they moved here from Brazil and he had to take college all over again. My other friend's dad used to be an engineering teacher in China...now he's a copy machine repair man. Sad stuff :(

I agree that it's really about the same as someone saying something about someone going to med school in Grenada or Mexico (or anyplace that is considered a 'backup med school') -- but I don't know what rank the Phillipines has in the real medical world.
Since I suppose the character was  written to have picked the Phillipines at random in making that comment - I guess that implies something....
But overall I think we all do get hit with those statements sometimes, like AC100 said.

Hmmm. Very controversial (I even read some comments made on YouTube about this clip)...
I agree with Etchy that it denigrates the quality of Philipino medical schools. It's quite disrespectful of them and it's moments like these when I wish TV producers, writers and broadcasters would be a little more sensitive...
Every race and religion, unfortunately, gets hit with these "jokes". I don't agree with them, but they exist.

it denigrates the quality of Philippine medical schools...   i'm not sure its right to extrapolate that into a comment about a segment of the US population... (if the doctor were Filipino, that would be a different story...)
