Over the past 12 years, Red Bull Music Academy has established itself as a platform for musical exchange, bringing together up and comers and established legends from all around the world. Over two ‘terms’, participants from 32 countries are joined by music legends and a dedicated studio team, who share their secret audio settings and inspiring life experiences.

London design team My Beautiful City have created three floors of studios and creative spaces, while artworks from leading UK artists have been added to the mix by curator Nick Hackworth. In this fantastic environment, a Romanian dubstepper might find himself jamming next to a painting of rare bird-song recordings, while a singer songwriter from Mexico pens her ‘butcher-rock’ lyrics under an installation about war, memory, and dough.

Art Of Noise

On Sunday 7^th February, the Academy opened its doors to welcome the first of many tireless musical explorers who were on hand to swap tips and inspiration with the participants. Artists such as collage deconstructionist duo Matmos, hypnotic post-minimalist composer Steve Reich, and heavyweight UK funky champ Roska all brought their wealth of studio knowledge and production techniques to the Academy couch in Term One. You Can Always Go… Downtown

The visiting musical luminaries didn't only flexed their skills in the studio and lecture hall. There was a massive line up of Academy gigs that took over some of London's legendary dance floors, where lecturers and participants test drove sounds fresh from the Academy studios. The Roundhouse hosted a 3D Soundclash, sending sounds from Plaid DJs, The Bug, and Clark deep into outer space, with a unique surround sound and audio imaging software developed by Martyn Ware of The Human League and Heaven 17. Meanwhile the ICA juxtaposes the voodoo noise of Drums Of Death, psych gospel new-waver James Pants, and bear-faced grime emcee GoldieLocks.
