Dengdai 等待 (The Waiting) to play in Beijing

等待 The Waiting 2008 a short film by Richard Trombly will play in Beijing on Saturday, February 28 at Club Obiwan. It is part of the Beijing International Film Week and the director will be present to discuss the film.

"This film presents a vivid depiction of modern Shanghai seen through the eyes of 9-year-old Peipei Wang. Following her mother's sudden death, she and her brother are forced to rely on each other. In traditional China, family is central but modern life is changing the culture. This film explores the meaning of family when these children must care for each other since the loving support they have known is disrupted. Emotions intensify when father is late from work one day and can’t be reached by phone. Peipei grasps the reality of their situation – without their father, they are entirely alone in the world. The children’s intense emotions involve us and draw us in throughout this short film and leads to a surprising ending."

Meiwenti community film project - Shanghai 2020

New Film Project -- Shanghai 2020

Meiwenti Productions is doing a community-based film project to create a near-future (year 2020) science fiction/ action film. (Think something like Johnnie neumonic or Matrix or some of the William Gibson "neuromancer" or other "cyber punk" stuff ... just more simple on the visual effects)

We are a mix of professional talents, (including some pro CGI and visual effects) and energetic amateurs coming together to make a low budget but high quality film...

Dengdai to make its USA premiere/ Christmas with the kids

I am visiting family in the USA for Christmas. Though Shanghai has been my home for 5 years, my kids moved back to USA. 11 year old Basil and 13 year old Anastasia were happy to have Dad home for christmas.

My son was happy to find the presents under the tree. Yes it is a white and cold Christmas in the Boston area.

one of the Christmas presents was the immigration of Max the cat. Found on the streets of Shanghai and adopted by my daughter, Max cameto USA on the plane with me (costing and extra $150!!!) This is his first time dealing with snow.

After opening presents, my daughter Ansatasia played her violin and Basil played guitar. Anastasia's favorite present was her new electric violin... She is starting a folk-rock band with some other talented young friends.

While I am here, I decided to do some PR of my films in USA. And it paid off.

My film Dengdai will be included in the Emerging Artists Showcase at Northampton, Massachusetts Pleasant Street Theater which also takes part in running the Northampton Independent Film Festival and where many of the films for NIFF are screened. (the NIFF happens in the fall and I did not want to wait until fall 2009 to show it in my home area.)

Distance Runners commences filming

In the early morning on a cold and windy December 16, over 20 crew and cast -- And 2 RED cameras -- converged on the Shanghai Longhua airport, perhaps china's oldest airfield to commence filming on Distance Runners. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1205476/

Under the expert direction of the multi-talented Robert Vicencio (check his profile on this site www.alivenotdead.com/robertvicencio ) we successfully completed a complicated day of filming involving race car action and a large crowd scene of extras and a few supporting cast. The expert Director of Photography Gianpaolo Lupori did an excellent job with the 2 RED cameras and capturing all the complicated shots the director requested.

This is the only Shanghai scene in this Yunnan-based film that will undergo principle filming in February 2009. Many thanks to all the talents as well as Coopers and New Balance for making this possible.

Journalist, director, producer, and screenwriter from Shanghai, China
Richard Trombly is a storyteller with 25+ years of experience. He is an author, screenwriter and film maker.

After attaining a B.A. From the University of Massachusetts with a degree in literature with concentrations in film and theater, he pursued a career in journalism. As a reporter for publications including major news outlets as well as national level magazines, he learned to interpret people's stories. He further developed his craft as a news editor to make the telling more factual, concise and powerful as well as assuring that there are enough details and depth to create a full and compelling story. In 2003, he moved to Shanghai, China to explore and report first-hand on the amazing developments transforming Asia.

Trombly started working in the entertainment industry in 2005. He started with community-based film productions as well as co-founding Shanghai's East West Theatre. Since that time, he has produced several stage productions and has been involved in more than 30 short films and several feature films of various budget levels. He was the associate producer of two feature films and produced The Ghosts of Old Shanghai. Trombly wrote several screenplays and has been an editor, script doctor or ghost writer on several feature films.
Trombly co-founded Obscure Productions films to assist in international co-productions and support the local film community as well as to produce and direct his own screenplays. He has directed several short films, two of which have been selected in international film festivals and his current animation/live action project ANALYSIS is in post-production at Crashdown Studios.
