  • dehumidifiers and mold

almost everyone in hong kong has a dehumidifier since it's so humid here.  one reason they have it is to help reduce mold since it's much easier for mold to grow in humid conditions.

but one thing i think people may not realize is that the dehumidifier itself is a source of mold.  why?  because it collects standing water into a enclosed, dark, and usually quite warm space.

i realized this when 1) i was dumping out the water from the dehumidifier and noticed mold growing all over the basin; and 2) when i turned the dehumidifier on after i got back from out of town and the air coming out of it smelled really dank and "moldy".

what you need to do is to clean the water collector basin for the dehumidifier every so often.  maybe once every month or two.  and make sure to use something to kill the mold.  it still doesn't help with any mold that's built up INSIDE the dehumidifier (which i'm sure there is), but it helps some.

i think the only way to solve mold growing inside the dehumidifier is to either replace the dehumidifier every so often, or get a high-end dehumidifier that has some sort of protection in place against mold (like one with uv lights).

[or maybe you could get an anti-mold spray and spray inside?  not sure if that's safe with all the electronics and stuff.  and not sure it's safe to breathe in fumes from the anti-mold spray.]

anyways, that's my friendly health tip for today!!

I fight mold daily (is there a superhero out there that does that?)
You should try an extra filter paper from 3M for your dehumidifier and a.c for extra protection~ha ha
    I'm sneezing thinking about it!

Mild bleach solution (follow the mixing directions on the bottle) is the best to disinfect and so prevent mold growth.  Given the heat and humidity in HK, I would say once every 5 days or so for cleaning and disinfecting.  This will be good practice for Swine flu season, too. :-)

Yep. Clean yer dehumidifier with a bleach and water solution (the bleach bottle should have mixing instructions on it for disinfecting) once a week.

Here in Michigan, we have the opposite problem in winter--it's WAAAAY too dry! A lot of people run humidifiers. Strange but true, they have the same problem--mold/mildew growing in the machine. I DO KNOW there is an anti-fungus solutions you can buy and add to the water. It keeps the machine free of unwanted spores. Might be worth investigating on your end for something similar. If you can take the cover off, or anything like that, plain old sunlight (the UV rays) kills molds/mildew.

Thanks for sharing :)  Mold is more dangerous than one thinks... there's an infectious disease that comes from mold in really dark damp places, called Cryptococcus.  Animals or humans can get it, though it's not contagious.  If it's breathed in from near the source of it is how you get it.  It's more common to get sick when it grows from mold & bird stool...but you can get it from really bad version of that specific mold only without bird stool..

Why do I know so much about it?  My INDOOR-ONLY (so not from bird stool) cat got it and was sick from 02/08-11/08.... Spent over $2000 and she's finally healthy...

    there's my contribution ;)

Isn't it strange that the device used to prevent mold has mold in and of itself?  :p  It definitely would help to clean it more often to prevent mold from forming.
