  • computer controlled cars

    just hit me the other day.  if all the cars were controlled by computers, wouldn't that mean we could get rid of stop signs and stoplights?  the computers could just control the timing exactly so that the cars would just pass by each other without hitting one another -- sort of like when people are walking around in a crowd.

    of course, you'd need to have some failsafe mechanisms to prevent massive car crashes if the computers ever had problems.

    you'd also need overhead walkways and such so that people could still cross streets.

    hmm, and you'd also need pretty much 100% of the cars to be controlled by the computer.

    the nice thing, though, is that ideally there wouldn't be any traffic jams and idling cars at stop signs/lights.  and you could make sure no one was speeding and also that cars were going at the most fuel efficient speeds.  that means you'd get to where you'd be going faster and save energy too.

    very futuristic idea, but sounds good.  I think now they have some cars that can parallel park with sensors so you can't hit the car in front or behind you.

    Talking of future transportation, some months ago I had a very vivid dream of our not-too-distant Earth future.

    In that world I dreamt of, everything was running on the latest available green technologies. There were no cars on the road, but monorails. Everything was running on these white-coloured monorail trains, powered by fixed, clean energy systems such as wind, solar and wave power. For the sake of the health of the Earth and everyone living on it, there were no more fuels being burned. There were these huge tunnels, converted from our current commericlally-biased motorised tunnels, into pedestrian zones and people got on these white, silent and open, sit-on trains which were built into the side of these white tunnels and took us, literally, all over the world in seconds.

    In this dream I had, cars were not made because they were considered symbols of egotism and unnecessary. For this was a free world, a world free of egotism, money and slavery, and in a world free of egotism and slavery, concern for the planet and all was first. Hence vehicles, buildings and such were built to last....so that no resources on the Earth are wasted.


    A few months later I watched a movie called Zeitgeist Addendum, and this talked about turning the Earth into a resource-based economy, where things were consumed on an as-needed and not wasteful basis. Funnily enough there was a section of this video that talked about future transportation, and in it, it talked about future Earth transportation as having a fixed monorail setup, to save power and resources. Scary coincidence huh? ^^

    seen something like this on the news before... the car actually has sensors to know if there is any hazards coming near... you could program the car to drive to your work... hahaa.... kinda crazy... but cool!!

    they've already been working on this for decades.  I knew some people who worked on the PATH project at Berkeley for several years in the 90s.  the problem isn't the cars that can drive themselves staying on the road or interacting with eachother,  the problem is them interacting with the cars that have people driving them...   

    basically you'd need to make two completely separate sets of highways.

    i'm still waiting for solar powered cars, or even electric car technology that can satisfy everyone. then maybe automated cars would be next if even possible. it's too bad money comes before technology. that's why we have to keep waiting for anything to change.

    If you wanted computer controlled cars to abide by California DMV laws, the humans better beware: at the DARPA urban Grand Challenge, the human drivers on the course thought the computer controlled cars drove like complete a--holes.

    It's likely there'll be human-only and bot-only lanes on the highway, and well separated too.  A lot of the strategies developed for automated control, like running trains of cars a la Nascar, would arguably be much safer than the crap you seen on the 880 today, but they probably wouldn't work very well if a human is whizzing around in there.

    You're sure in the thinking mode :-) As long as these systems don't run on Windows, crash cuz of memory overload and need reboot every so often, that would be a dream....but then again, if they figure this one out, auto-pilot car like how they do with airplane would be even better. Timing is everything (^_^)

    I often had the same thought on the PA Turnpike and Schuylkill Expressway (an ironic name if I ever heard one).  But people don`t want to relinquish the individual right to drive like a-holes.  I always think when I am driving on a certain road....hmmm would this one work with automatic driving feature?   Almost always the answer is yes and the expense: reward would be worth it.   I don`t see why this could not be made to work with pedestrian crossings.  Theoretically pedestrians would be safer not less safe.

    yeah, in minority report they had cars that drove automacally on what seemed to be magnetic freeways in vertical and horizontal planes.

    of course driving is fun, but could be automated on certain fixed routes, like the tube under the english channel for example.

    this to avoid accidents and improve speed. (probably almost impossible to implement)

    i think the example of 880 in the bay area or 405 in LA is valid too, let´s say you are going from alameda to fremont, u drive until you engage into 880 S, then your car´s control is locked until you reach the exit you want. u can talk, text, surf the net, shave, apply makeup and all those things people do while driving today....

    I don't think I would want to drive if my car was controlled by computers, kind of takes the fun out of driving.  But then again, I like the fact that we would have no more accidents and crazy drivers as well.

    i  have been saying this for your years, but on freeways, you approach the 101 ramp, go into computer operated mode and then get off wherever your exit is. the computer handle all the cars within the freeway as fast as possible. somethin similar was shown on minority report.
