Locking (dance)

Locking (originally Campbellocking) is a style of funk dance and street dance, which is today also associated with hip hop. It relies on fast and distinct arm and hand movements combined with more relaxed hips and legs. The movements are generally large and exaggerated, and often very rhythmic and tightly synched with the music. Locking is quite performance oriented, often interacting with the audience by smiling or giving them a high five, and some moves are quite comical in nature.

Locking was originally danced to traditional funk, such as James Brown. Funk music is still commonly favored by locking dancers, and used by many competitions such as the locking division of Juste Debout.

The name is based on the concept of locking movements, which basically means freezing from a fast movement and landing in a certain position, holding that position for a short while and then continuing in the same speed as before. These movements create a strong contrast towards the many fast moves that are otherwise performed quite continuously, combined with mime style performance and acting towards the audience and other dancers. Locking includes quite a lot of acrobatics and physically demanding moves, such as landing on ones knees and the split. These moves often require knee protection of some sort.

A locker is a locking dancer. Lockers commonly use a distinctive dress style, such as colorful clothing with stripes and suspenders.

Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quiñones is an award-winning Choreographer/Director who has amassed an impressive 30 plus years of experience in the entertainment industry! Shabba-Doo has worked extensively in creative and executive production capacities for highly successful feature films, television shows, major concert tours, and Broadway musical theater productions.

Shabba-Doo, danced his way into a lucrative professional career, starring in and choreographing a string of high-profile internationally televised specials and feature films, including: Breakin’ (Cannon/MGM); Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo (Cannon/Tri-Star Pictures); Lambada…Set The Night On Fire (Warner Bros.); and The Big Show (NBC).

The success of his trend-setting, box-office smashes impelled the authoritative DanceMagazine to dub Shabba-Doo “Hip-Hop’s first matinee idol”. This distinguished recognition of his visionary dance talents, led to collaborative working relationships with a wide-range of superstars such as Madonna, Bette Midler, Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Bill Cosby and even ole blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra!

To broaden his artistic scope, he attended the world-renowned American Film Institute as a Directing Fellow. Upon his subsequent graduation, he secured the financing, co-wrote, choreographed, and made his directorial debut with the independent feature film Rave…Dancing to a Different Beat, distributed by New Line Cinema.

On Q Media, Inc.’s current production slate includes the global distribution and promotion of Funk-Shway™, Shabba-Doo’s dance/fitness concept. A book/ documentary film package: Shabba-Doo “The King of Crenshaw” is also in the works. Shabba-Doo’s most recent choreography project is the newly released Yari Film Group production "Kickin' It Old Skool," starring Jamie Kennedy, now on DVD.

The ever-evolving Shabba-Doo has set his sights on new horizons. He will Choreograph, and star in “B-Style” a new dance film slated to shoot in North Carolina in the fall, 2008. Shabba-Doo has three projects he created currently in development: “One Nation, One Groove,” an historic exploration of hip-hop dance; “Battle for the Streets,” a reality dance competition television series in cooperation with Network/Insight and “The House of Shway,” an instructional dance DVD series.
