    Greetings fellow loved ones,

Here is an update on my situation with Iranian team trials. First there are the present facts, and then there is a long spiel regarding the specifics of the tournament which you need not bother with if you’re not interested. I thought I’d get it all out so I don’t have to explain a bunch a times. If there are any other questions, feel free to hit me up later.

Outcome:   I have made it on the Iranian national team and will begin team training in a camp (Azadi stadium) in one week time.  This however does not mean that I am going to the world tournament yet. There are about 10 people chosen for the national team, and it is not certain how many of them will be sent to represent in the 9th world tournament. The objective of this camp is to choose a select few individuals with highest probability of being awarded medals to and send them to china in October to prepare for the tournament.

Explanation of tournament:   So… this glorious outcome came after a very emotionally and physically stressful series of events. First and foremost, my weapons, consisting of two staves and two swords did not arrive with me when I arrived in Iran. The damn British kept them in London for security reasons till this morning (two days after the tournament). So now that I have my debut in the Sydney Opera house and my violin didn’t arrive with me, I begin some mad improvisation and buy a crappy aluminum sword (cuz they don’t have standard, gui ding, broad swords in Iran), fix it up with a pipe handle and borrow a non china staff made of termite wood up to my nose for the tournament.  Needless to say my staff form was a disaster, I dropped my staff at the throw but managed not to break it and actually impress people cuz I went ape shit when I had nothing to lose. Broad sword I was also much slower than usual cuz of the weird sword weight and the fact that it was coming loose mid way through my form, but I did pretty well and I managed to make the crowd go ape shit when I caught my sword at the beginning. Long fist I dare say that I did the best if ever done in my life. I stuck everything and maintained good speed, clean stances, facial intensity etc. I was very proud of that form which was also the last event.

Now I must explain a little something that I would like to call… absolute bull poop. The judges for this tournament were judging with the new international standard rules… however it was their first time doing so. The judging at this tournament made US team trials look like Gandhi, mother Teresa, Bono and Jesus giving a seminar on judging ethics. Instead of the “standard international competition” rules they used the “high score to people we know and have chosen no matter how much they mess up and regardless of how much better the guys we don’t want are” rules. I won’t go into much more detail except to say that when I received my broad sword score, all my friends booed and protested. The beautiful part was that when I got my Long fist score, which took about 10 minutes (literally) to calculate, half the stadium booed and my friends were yelling at the judges, even some judges began arguing with each other. It worked out so perfectly that I was just .1 under one of their chosen boys with a score of 8.32, when the top score (which I feel I was at least around the same level as) was a 9.5. Contrary to my feelings I saluted the judges and walked away.

Aright, so all that stuff really put me down for a day and I truly experienced the ugly side of corrupt judging, but fortune had something else in store for me. The chosen people for the national team are the top three in each event, but I and one other dude were chosen by the head of the federation and the head coach (china dude) to join the team as well. The federation dude apologized to me about the judging and explained that they have no idea what they’re doing and that the final decision lies with the china dude who will base his decision based on performance during this camp. So things worked out quite well.

Aside from all the lame stuff, I had a pretty awesome time. Before and during the competition I made many friends and everyone treated me very kindly. After the competition, at the stadium, I became friends with all the Iranian wushu people. It was awesome, I was kinda like a celebrity for them because of my silks and because I was in china. They friggin called me Zhao Qing Jian cuz of my form and my silks. One dude was like “hey, are you the one in the picture arm wrestling li neng miao?” and when I said yeah, he freaked out and told his friends “I told you it was him!” hehe, they all recognized me from wudis profile and YouTube and stuff, it was great.  There were two real good long fist guys with insane 720 jumps and speed (not the best basics though) and one hella good nanquan guy. So personal judgment is that I among the top three guys in this country… so we’ll see what happens.

    Love you all

    cheers
