I just want to remind you to one of the most emotional moments of the reunification of Germany - The day when the wall fell - or rather the first day you were allowed to travel freely between the two parts of Germany! Especially for the families who were divided it was a day to celebrate. It took almost a year until the reunification was official but this is the day to remember!

From this day on Trabbis belonged to the streets everywhere in Germany...

But I also have to remember to one of the darkest days in German history. The "Reichsprogromnacht" on the 9/10 November 1938, where the repressions against the jewish people reached a sad peak...read mor at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht

Thank you for a very touching blog, and for bringing back these memories. It was an incredible scene to see freedom returned to those who had been denied it for so long.

i only heard this on history lesson .... this is one of the most historical moment in this planet earth.

Did you have family on the other side Silky? I can't imagine the elation of reuniting families after 40 years, or at least for those who outlived the wall. You can't ever build a wall to keep out ideas.

I hope your people keep both of these events in mind, close to their hearts, and remember so that they can be the keepers of the flame -- be the leaders showing the supreme triumphs and failures of humanity. The Germans have witnessed so much.

I was around 14 when it happened - It was a really exciting time together with the release of the refugees in the german embassy in Prague, happened a year (or half a year) before...

Like laney! I remember watching live on TV, I had goosebumps as I watched it being taken down, even at such a young age

I remember watching the wall come down live on the tv here in the UK and thinking "this is a moment in history"

The only other time I felt like that was watching the release of Nelson Mandella

An emotional time for all....I cannot begin to imagine the emotions of all the people as the wall fell (nor of the horrors of the same day back in 1938).

We celebrate "Veteran's Day" in the US on November 11th. It's a tribute to those who have died while serving our country and to honor to those who have served and are now in the private sector.
