  • thinking english - losing german?

I'm a little bit worried because I prefer to think and to dream in english, rather in german, my mothertongue...

Maybe I just use english too much???

It's always difficult for me to switch back to german when I've talked english for a while...though i have no difficulties to write and talk in german if it's required...

Am I losing my german? Or is it just normal to someone who is bilingual?

Hmm, I'm not sure when I wake up, if the first word is english or german. My work is 80% german, but it required to switch between these two languages. When I'm out with my friends we talk german of course. When I'm on AnD and chat with friends I use english. Maybe I use english more for thinking because it's less complicated than german.
At least most of our suggestions soothed me a bit...

Is it that when you're awake and you're thinking, talking the first word that comes to mind is English?  Even though you are German-speaking working in Germany, apparently you do most of your work in English.  I don't know what I'm talking about here but it stands to reason that the language center in your brain is probably similar to keyboard language you select----I mean, poor brain, it can't have every language in some staging area to place on the tip of your tongue!  It's probably just been reorganizing itself to make it easier for you to work, and then when you meet friends you all speak (what?) and when you dream it supplies the likely most necessary language for you....and at this point it's probably English rather than German.

Luckily you have your adult education in German and will always have that advanced vocabulary in your head.  A soldier I know married a German girl who was 18 and when she'd go back home she'd say she still only had the vocabulary of a teenager!

I don't think you'll lose your German. Maybe just before you went to sleep you were speaking or thinking about English and it followed into your dreams. I wish I was Bilingual as good as you are!

I think dreaming in English is your brain's way to reinforce the progress you have made in it. Never ever will you lose any of your German imo, that is too much a part of you. :)

Hahaha, passiert mir genau so, Silke !!
Doch wir vergessen die erstgelernte Sprache
nicht, nur die Grammatik muß immer wieder
    aufgefrischt werden.
Und wie JRS sagt, durch in englisch zu
    träumen verbessert sich Deine Sprachkenntnis.

Muha-hahahahahhaa!!!  English will take over the world!

That's too funny...I have seen so much progress in your English, Silky!  I think that thinking and dreaming reinforce what you are learning.  Practice makes perfect!  You'll never be out of touch with German, though...it's more engrained than you know!

I sometimes think in French.  Also, sometimes it takes me a few extra seconds to realize that I'm reading French because it's so natural.

Sure I use my german at home, at the office and in private...at the moment I don't see any tendency that I lose it, my thinking just switched from german to english....

    Hi Silky,

I don't know if that's normal.  If I were you I would use my german more at home.  You don't want to loose that knowledge.  They say if you don't use it you will loose it.  That works with every thing else so why not this to.  Take care.

I have no idea sandy - actually it's positive to think in another language...because then you made the step to use a foreign language intentionally...
