Khalil Fong concert in Beijing

Two weeks ago, I went with some friends to Khalil Fong's (方大同) concert here in Beijing. It's impressive how popular Khalil has gotten here in China within the last year and a half -- previously being primarily a Greater China sensation isolated to primarily HK and Taiwan.

Nonetheless, Khalil's popularity proves that talent and honest-to-god impressive musicality shines through the endless stream of pseudo-celebrities that roll through China.

Khalil performed an impressive three hours that saw him doing his diverse range of his own original songs as well as a large number of covers of classic R&B. The packed house was surprisingly young and it was refreshing to hear the young fans calling out "Stevie Wonder!", singing along to cover songs that were probably popular a generation before they were born. Khalil went through his usual covers of Michael Jackson, Al Green, and others, but his voice and musicality seems most at home with Stevie Wonder. If anything, Khalil seemed more happy to perform these awesome covers of R&B classics than even some of his recent Mandarin-language hits like Love Song, 三人游, and 爱爱爱 (and early hits like 够不够 weren't even performed).

It's gratifying to see the recent indications of a resurgence of honest-to-goodness performing musicians here in China like Khalil and recently-on-break-from-the-industry Joanna Wang. Hopefully this is just an early beginning to a long music career. He just needs to get a bit more comfortable performing in a large venue like he did in Beijing. I still remember seeing Khalil perform for the first time at a small corporate event a year and a half ago at California Bar with no more than 150 people and he seemed much more comfortable solo than on a huge stage with a multipiece backing band.
