Since the success of 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' in 2000, directors in China's so-called 5th generation of movie directors have switched over from smaller, art house type projects to larger and larger budgeted historical pieces. The 5th generation includes such names as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige and Feng Xiaogang. Their big blockbusters include films like 'Curse of the Golden Flower', 'Banquet' and 'The Promise'. But not everyone is impressed with the new focus, many younger filmmakers are unhappy with the quality and market domination of the new films. The question is, has the art taken a back seat to box office dollars and overseas marketability?
