Since 2006's 'Super Girl' talent search, there has been an explosion in the popularity of these types of shows. There has been a backlash from the government over the glut and the relatively sensationalistic nature of the shows. They have already banned several shows for "vulgar content and low taste."
Many of the current shows use phone, internet or SMS-based voting polls similar to international shows. The government is justifying this ban on the costs associated with the voting, saying that many impoverished families have spent large amounts of money trying to vote their children into the finals of these types of competitions.
But experts note that the government also seems concerned with the concept of live regional and national voting being performed on television.
