• 37th HKIFF kicks off with stellar guests and world premiere of IP MAN – THE FINAL FIGHT

  17 March 2013 (Hong Kong) ― Set to run till 2 April with over 300 titles from 68 countries and regions, the 37^th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) opened tonight at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with the world premiere of Ip Man – The Final Fight, directed by veteran Herman YAU, produced by Checkley SIN, and starring Anthony WONG, Eric TSANG, Gillian CHUNG, Anita YUEN, Jordan CHAN, Timmy HUNG, Marvel CHOW, ZHOU Chuchu and Jonathan WONG. IP Chun, son of the legendary IP Man, also made a guest experience in the film. Co-presented by National Arts Films Production Ltd and Emperor Motion Pictures, it is a riveting and untold story of the oft-filmed kung fu master in his sunset years in Hong Kong.

   

  Wing Chun master IP Chun, producer Checkley SIN, leading man Anthony WONG, and cast members Timmy HUNG, Marvel CHOW, ZHOU Chuchu and Jonathan WONG were all present to kick off the 17-day festival. Anthony WONG, who received the producer’s new book about Wing Chun at the ceremony, said, “I am very delighted to have the opportunity to portray Ip Man. He’s no doubt an unparalleled legend, but this film goes beyond the heroism to reveal his inner emotions to the audience.”

   

  
  

  Wilfred WONG, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), attended the event with officiating guest Susie HO, JP, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology). “By showcasing the latest gems and beloved classics of cinema every year, and nurturing and discovering emerging talents, the HKIFF continues to prove it is a major event in the international cultural calendar,” said Wong. “We are grateful for the support of our government, sponsors, partners, competition juries, filmmakers, film companies, distributors, archives, the press and many other friends for their unwavering support throughout the years.”

   

  Bringing added glamour to the Grand Opening was HKIFF Ambassador Miriam YEUNG, who was presented with a golden Wing Chun practice model from producer Checkley SIN. “This special gift is such a nice surprise,” she said. “I may not be a Wing Chun master, but the sense of discipline and dedication is something we all share in the film industry.”
