     KEY ART REVEALED
37th HKIFF to spark boundless imagination

22 January 2013 (Hong Kong) ― The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) announced today the key art of the 37th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), a lively and contemporary work by renowned, young local graphic designer Ken Lo.

The design incorporates the eye-catching Chinese character “想” rendered in modernist graphic. The character means to think or to imagine, and connotes a wide range of meanings that strike a chord with filmmakers: from the “dream” (夢想) of setting foot in the business, to “sudden whims” (奇想) essential to creative breakthroughs, and to the “wild mind” (狂想) that drives artists to go against the grain with belief and determination.

“Over the years, the HKIFF has reached out to the public with an evolving variety of key art designs,” said Lo. “Graphic design is known for its simple but strong visual punch, and with the vivid and eye-catching colours of the key art this year, I aim to further enhance the visual identity of the festival. What is more, the extended strokes of the Chinese character are a symbol of the boundless imagination of artists exploring different directions and venturing into uncharted territory.”

Lo started up his own company in 2010 and worked with K11 Design Store, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority among other notable clients for various branding and design projects. In 2011 Lo was selected by Perspective, the respected design magazine for its “40 Under 40” showcase of young talent, while winning the champion of the Victoria Harbour Icon Design Competition. In 2012 he was selected by Time Out as one of the “The Design Hot 25 – 25 Hong Kong city’s top talents you need to know”.

“Lo’s highly original design is a perfect mix of simplicity and sophistication, inviting filmmakers and moviegoers to embark on a journey of imagination, where new possibilities in cinema await discovery and appreciation. We are sincerely grateful for his hard work and dedication,” said LI Cheuk-to, Artistic Director of the HKIFFS.

The 37th HKIFF will run from 17 March to 2 April. The key art will be featured on all promotion platforms including the Programme and Booking Folder, the official website, and mobile applications.
