    19 March 2014 (Hong Kong) – The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS)’s monthly programme, HKIFF Cine Fan announced its April / May screenings, preceded by the 38th HKIFF, featuring “Local Heroes”, a section dedicated to local productions, “Terrence Malick: Spoken Voices & Wordless poetry”, two independent works in “Matsumoto Toshio in Japanese New Wave”, “Ozu: 4 Classics Restored”, full exhibition of “Asghar Farhadi: 6 Moral Tales”, “Decades on the Road to Freedom: Postwar History through Recent Czech Cinema” and “Documentaries of Our Times” with AI Weiwei. Film buffs are also able to immerse into the World of Al PACINO through The Godfather, The Godfather ll and Dog Day Afternoon. Don’t miss out the richest and most exciting Cine Fan edition ever!

     

    “Terrence Malick: Spoken Voices & Wordless poetry”

    Regarded as the “poet” of film, Terrence MALICK’s two classics in film history: Badlands and Days of Heaven, were respectively nominated in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and 4 Academy Awards. MALICK was also awarded the Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival with Days of Heaven. Returning after 20 years, MALICK tackled another mythic genre The Thin Red Line, winning him the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated in 7 Academy Awards. Following with The Tree of Life, he won the Golden Palm Award at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. MALICK has received consistent praise for his work and has been regarded as one of the greatest living filmmakers. His exquisitely beautiful direction enlightens American cinemas towards a new era. The edition will also screen The New World and To the Wonder.

     

    Matsumoto Toshio in Japanese New Wave

    The edition will screen two independent works of MATSUMOTO, Funeral Parade of Roses and Demons, known as the most confrontational and provocative master pieces. MATSUMOTO was regarded as one of the originators of Japanese New Wave with OSHIMA Nagisa, TADAO Sato, KOJI Wakamatsu and MASAHIRO Shinoda, who together established a film critic magazine in the 50s. MATSUMOTO is famous of his singular fusion of the avant-garde with elements of non-fiction cinema and counterculture, defying the limitation of visibility.

    Decades on the Road to Freedom: Postwar History through Recent Czech Cinema and Documentaries of Our Times

    Theses 6 screenings of recent Czech series represent a unique programme in repertory cinema and mark the chronicle Czech history, from the Nazi occupation, confinement as a socialist state, to the rise of capitalism towards freedom preceded by the downfall of communism. In the “Documentaries of Our Times” edition, 2 documentaries will be screened, featuring AI Weiwei with a detailed account from the protagonist himself on the 81 days of detention, and his question to the human rights in China.

     

    The World of Al PACINO

    The final additional screening of The Godfather will be on 26 April, followed by the screening of The Godfather ll on the same day. Starring Al PACINO, Dog Day Afternoon will also be screened in April, and the 21 April screening is a double bill with the special presentation of The Dog, to bring out the dramatic real-life story behind this Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Don’t miss out the world of Al PACINO!

     

    The programme also includes restored classics with four masterpieces by OZU Yasujiro and Valerio ZURLINI’s The Desert of the Tartars and Top 20 Must See films Jean-Luc GODARD’s Breathless, and Stanley DONEN and Gene KELLYs’ Singin’ in the Rain. Come and enjoy the feast of films!
