LC went to New York yesterday, she will stay there for more than three years. She had an American dream when she was a kid. At that moment she was too excited to notice any sadness of leaving.
Most of us have an idealistic picture of life in New York. We sometimes imagine this city to be a sort of paradise where there is no shortage of high buildings, lots of expensive shops are shining in the famous arcades, people dressed in smart suits are walking confidently along the wall street. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite, some films about New York, they convey the stark realities of life for the poor. New York! New York! Is it paradise or hell? Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the chance to find out.
When we are young, some of us are willing to sacrifice a comfortable life in our native land for the privilege of having a foreign education background. But if you decide to go abroad, at first, prepare yourself something very dreadful from the cultural shock..
No Chinese ever looks at the western civilization with pristine eyes, we see it edited by a definite set of customs and institutions and ways of thinking. From the moment of our birth, the patterns of culture into which we are born shape our experience and behaviour. Five years of studying and working in France, I couldn’t insist my traditional value, I couldn’t accept the western value either, I didn’t feel inferior, I was not confident either ; I couldn’t express my true feelings, I didn’t try to read the others’ mind either. I always complained the worst parts of the two nations, in fact, I was too weak to face up the difficulties. People say no pains, no gains, there is a will there is a way, or nothing is impossible to a willing heart, I do understand, but the sense of lost was horrible… Now, I know what I want, but I’m 26 years old, is it too late?
LC will begin her new life in US soon, and I will begin my new life in a new city in China as well, good luck for both of us. If one day I could visit New York, I want to see the longest suspension bridge, it is named after an Italian explorer. Despite its immensity, is it both simple and elegant, fulfilling its designer s dream to create an enormous object drawn as faintly as possible?
