Even after starring in Media Corp’s Channel 8’s blockbuster “Little Nyonya” and Channel 5’s blockbuster “Fighting Spiders” many still think that Andie became a competent performer in the short 4 months of training during Star Search 2007. During which he bagged the title of overall Champion, topping 3 of the 4 segments. He lived up to the media’s high expectations after his dazzling performance in the Semi- finals where he topped all four segments. However, the truth is,Andie’s training began at a young age of 11 and in his strive to fulfil his childhood dream, Andie has endured hard landings as well as sacrifices.
Before Andie’s shot to stardom, he has already been involved in numerous television productions and was cast as season regulars on progammes such as Channel 5’s “Heartlanders” (season 4), “Tiramisu” and Channel U’s “Ok! No Problem.” He is also no stranger to theatre acting, being a member of the Hokkien Huay Kuan Youth Drama Group from 1995 – 1998, and later, the Teochew Ba Yi Huay Kuan Youth Drama Club from 1998 – 2002.
Andie also dabbled with freelance hosting and performing for a year to help with the expenses of his family. During this short stint, he completed more than 80 performances, including many big-scale projects. One such event was the National Day Art Exhibition 2005, an annual event boasting an audience of 1500 and heavy-weight guests such as President Mr. S R Nathan.
Andie is also no newcomer to modelling. His towering physique of 1.83m had landed him various print advertisements as well as runway projects, working with major brands such as Nike and StarHub.
Work aside, Andie chose to pursue a Diploma in Film Sound and Video with Ngee Ann Polytechnic as there was no performing art school that offered a full-time arts program in Singapore then. He believes that to become a great actor, one also has to understand the production side of film-making. He graduated with awards including the best graduation project of the year. His $16, 000 budget, 15-minute short film entitled “Aik Khoon” was selected for various prestigious international film festivals such as the Singapore International Film Festival, Hong Kong and Greater China University Film Festival and Prabhat Film Festival.
Even whilst serving his national service, Andie did not forsake his dreams and goals. He was successfully accepted into the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company. In the 2 years that Andie served the nation, he not only completed more than 150 shows as an Actor, Host, Singer and Dancer, but also took up numerous different classes with professional trainers such as Hossan Leong and David Charles Tay. After being appointed as the Drama-in-Charge of SAF MDC in 2006, Andie carried on to represent the SAF to perform in Rock-Hampton, Australia.
Andie often stresses that what he has achieved today is not a result of talent, but of consistent hard work and perseverance. He believes that dreams and goals can be reached by all who put their heart and soul into it. He sees the winning of Star Search not as the pinnacle of success, but as a milestone and a beginning in his journey to better himself as a performer and a provider of his family.
