    I cannot get over how our lives have changed by email. Everyday, I get on my computer and can get in touch with all of my friends from all over the world, within seconds. it does not matter whether we have major time difference, I just get on my computer and type up a short hello. When I get up the next day, I will sure get a response from my friends. It's hard to remember those days when we have no cell phone, black berry, fax or answering machine, computers...Somehow, people still are able to get in touch... by letters! I don't remember the last time I wrote a letter. I used to love to write letters, now I only send cards. I have forgotten how to write a good letter.  Most of the time, when I go to my mail box, the majority of my mail are paper ads and junk mail, and oh, bills... burried in between pages of junk mail. Have to say I much rather sit infront of my computer than go to my mail box because  9 X out of 10, it's filled with wasteful, junk mail!
    But email is different! Great for ecology since we are not wasting paper so we don't have to cut down that many trees...
    A big "Thank you" to the Email Inventor... you are the best!

    email is great.  altho there is a lot of email spam out there now too.

    I think it's really cool that you keep all your letters.
    Sometimes I take out my boxes of letters and cards that I receive over years and just read through everything and try to remember exactly what I was doing the first time I read them.

    I still receive invitations in the mail on occasion with handwriting as opposed to an evite.  Other than that, the last letter I received was in college when my friend included confetti so when I opened the envelope, the confetti would fall out.  Nowadays, I can chat with her everyday online and still maintain a close friendship altho we lived on opposite sides of the US for 6 years.

    Yeah with our advance technologies everything is faster and more convenient now. Although it's sometimes nice to receive a letter every now and then. =)

    Maybe I'm confused but as long as the servers for these websites are intact and accessible a hundred years from now, so will the blog.  I often run into old websites where the page is expired.  Whether or not its saved and available is up to the 3rd party website.

    My blogs are not saved on my computer.  My e-mails are because I'm nutty enough to save them all.  You can lose hard copies too (e.g. personal letters can get tossed or destroyed) but in the latter case it's up to the recipient whether the item is saved, not the website.  

    My undergrad degree is in history and there's a lot of information lost every day on which historians have traditionally relied.  Personal letters is just a part.  I think it's incredible to read the correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Or to read Civil War era letters.  I have a note my uncle scribbled to my grandmother on the back of a WWII photo of him and my dad in Marseilles.  It's one of my prized possessions, misspellings and all.

    I'm an e-mailer.  But those messages are definitely not the same stuff I would put in an intimate letter.

    I don't write letters anymore...especially since the cost of stamps keep rising. I do still send out cards on holidays and birthdays. It's nice getting something that is not bill related in the mail. Do you keep all of your letters and cards? I have every letter and card I ever received since I was in the second grade I think...except for all those little Valentine's Day cards.

    i disagree with the assertion that electronic communications will 'evaporate':  thats one of the problems with the internet.   copies of anything and everything you write can be kept in perfect condition forever.

    20,40,60,100 years from now your kids or grandkids or great-grandkids will know exactly what you wrote on your blog on June 26th 2007 at 3:34pm...

    I'm with flag, writing letters is not my forte either. I also agree in that there is something extra special about a hand written letter. Our friends might put a lil' stamp with personal characteristics, or drawings etc. I miss that. However, e-mailing is very convenient.

    I would have to disagree, flag on the storage of past hand written letters. If there was a fire, god forbid, they might burn, and our e-mails will still be there?

    Emailing is very convenient. But sometimes I miss receiving letters in the mail.

    i totally agree ~ I find it really hard to write an actual letter these days, I'd much rather chat online or write an e-mail.

    agree with everything said so far... the Internet/Email was such a great addition to communication, makes things a lot easier... but the feeling of receiving a letter in the mail is so special... I still look forward to getting the mail everyday... but I hardly get anything... =( don't know what I'm thinking... hahaa.... but I'm happy to even receive an email from a friend now.... hahaa... =X

    Yes, sometimes I'm nostalgic about the lost of the written letter, and even cards are becoming scarcer. Email is really convenient, saves paper, etc., but still a letter is really personal...I think about this a lot too!

    I get really excited when I receive a hand written letter from a friend now because they're as rare as the dodo.  I was never a reliable letter writer, but I do my share of e-mailing.  

    Technology has certainly made the world smaller, and I'm grateful for the ability to communicate to you and other all over the world.  

    I have letters received thirty years ago I can still take them out their box, unfold them and read, like little personal treasures.  I don't think I'll have that same feeling from e-mails which generally don't get that personal.  Blogs come closer to that kind of communication.  

    That's one of the only downsides of high tech communication together with its impact on historical research.  Eventually, e-mails just evaporate.  I like reading "collected letters" of prominent figures of arts and letters.  I doubt there will be any such 21st century collections  ("this was a text message from Pres. Y when she was 17 years old....").   

    Interesting to contemplate Elizabeth.
