I was so happy to receive all the input about my blog on "EMAIL".
That trigger me to write about something else...the "sense of touch". I remember when I was growing up, most of my toys were something that I could hold, or touch: like a doll, or some plastic kitchen utensils or a doctor's set...things that I need to use my hand to pick up and hold., things that I can touch. Now adays, popular toys for children are mostly video games on a play station. To me, that's like living life through some secondary experience - You see it, you participate by pressing buttons on a remote control. I wonder how that will affect the "participants" who are the young people of this generation. They are  so engrossed with video games... will their sense of humanity and compassion be like "my generation"? When they grow up and become parents, will they be more logical and removed or will they still be able to have empathy for others or is that considered to be "silly emotion"?  I probably will have no idea as I am not in their skin. Just very very curious, and concerned...
I look at the current trend of films that are big box office hit -  most of the popular and well received ones are catered for the "younger generation" who love exaggerated sensationalism, explosions, shoot-them-ups, mass murders and blood and gore.. Perhaps it's "generation gap", perhaps I am too old fashioned... but I sure hope technology has not dumb down our senses so much that we can't relate to each other any more. That's a scary thought and will be a great loss!

i am cynical yet optimistic.    i think good parenting and self-control are important for anything, whether its the latest new invention or an age old addiction... :-P

the human being is a pretty robust thing,  in my view these types of 'dead end' things are the symptoms, not the cause....

i agree, they should decrease the spx and eye candy visuals. I like stories, so when I get to watch something that has depth, it is an experience as if it was meditation to me.  When you have down time, let's meet up. I want to know how I can help you on your next directorial proj. - hugs!

There was an experiment done with a family on their road trip to their location. The trip was about a four hour drive. They drove with there usual mini -van full of gadgets for the kids. The gadgets consist of; DVD player for the kids to watch in the back, hand held video game players at their availibility, I-pods and cell phones. They took the trip first with all these, and hardly a word was said in teh car for the whole trip, except when they needed the bathroom or were hungry. I guess the parents made the car this way so they wouldn't have to deal with the arguing of their children and the boredom that they get.

They took the trip again with all the gadgets removed. They participated in, *eye-spy* and various other verbal interactive games. When they asked the kids on what journey they preferred, they said the one without the gadgets because it made them feel closer as a family and to their parents. The kids were better behaved on the non-gadget trip compared to the gadget trip. So, even though this isn't really regarding touch, it is in the same vein of human interaction. Which I agree is lacking in todays hobbies for kids.

I really enjoy video games, but when I have children, I will definitely incorporate the simplicity of human interaction and touch. And rep the rewards. :P

I think we as parents have the responsibility to make sure our children have a balance.  Technology should be kept up with since that's just the real world yet at the same time, we should spend time with our children to kick a ball around or just build blogs together.

I think when I have kids I'm going to send them to summer camp and make sure they get in touch with nature too. I wish my parents took me camping or hiking...but they were too busy working. Luckily I got to go to a bunch of museums, zoos, and plays on school field trips.

i think this IS a problem that's occurring now in da society these days, pretty sad.  Technology is thought to bring us closer together but it seems to distant us from getting in touch with the reality or people around you

I remember I used to play house, push around my neon shopping cart, puzzles, barbie dolls, and cabbage patch kid. I got my first game boy when I was about 8 or 9 I think. A couple of weeks ago I saw a 4 year old playing a nintendo ds. I think there is just a lot more technological toys available to children these days. Ya know...it's the parents (aunts & uncles) buying these toys.

Yeah i agree with musicnote. It's like everything that we have to work for or use a lot of effort has been replace by technologies that make work faster and less effort to it. That can also be a plus or minus to things.
For instant, on Xmas, 3gs phone with videocam can help interact with your family and it's a lot faster to communicate with them if you are far away. But then you would miss out on the part about "just being there" with them. There's always two sides to things. Just depend on how you look at it. =)

Back then kids would want to go out and play soccer or some other outdoor activity but it seems like now they can just say "Oh let's play soccer on the Playstation!" That's sad.

When I was a kid, my mom kicked us out the door at 7 a.m., threw sandwiches out at noon, and dad gave a loud whistle at around 5 to call us home for dinner, and we ran.  We made up our own baseball fields and with just a bat and ONE ball, organized games.  We learned to negotiate teams and solve our own problems--no adult hovering.   But more importantly, we did a lot of role-playing, soldiers, gangsters on the run, hiding out, or we'd play house, another favorite was "reform school."  The small patch of woods was our paradise where we built huts and swung on vines in the trees.  Fun stuff.   The point is we really exercised imagination with the objects we used to replicate reality, and with the roles we assumed, or even the costumes we wore.  We were the ones who made it all up.  We weren't in a game designers world---those games seem like fun, but by design they have to be restrictive, have rules, etc.

If that's a part of your kid's day, ok.  But what I'm hearing is "the kids in the neighborhood are never outside playing."  We have a friend with 5 kids---she is a  "get outside and PLAY" kind of mom.  They run around the neighborhood, banging on doors, and getting other kids out to play.  Some of the other mothers call them "wild."  They don't know how lucky they are to have some life in that neighborhood.

I learned a lot about being an adult by playing when I was a kid.  And I also watched movies on TV too (in NYC the Million Dollar Movie would play the same movie like 9 times in one week).  By the time I was a teen TV had become too much of my life.

There's something missing when your  interaction is just virtual (like this).

I don't ever remember saying "I'm bored" when I was a kid. Even when it rained, we lined up chairs on the porch and smelled the rained and watched it wash everything clean, listened to the thunder and made up stories.

Seriously, kick the kids out the door.  Touch, feel, smell, imagine.

i try to look at these things skeptically through the longer lens of time...

People have always been fearful of the influence of new things on the future generations.  They said the same thing about Pac-Man... about rap music, TV, rock and roll, movies,  the radio, jazz, etc.

The demise of human society is greatly exaggerated!
