It's been a while since I made an entry on this site. Been busy working on composing some new music, new bands, new jobs and generally over-extended with online social networking. Had to take a Facebook hiatus.

I've been seeing a lot of good shows lately. Trumpeter Eddie Gale with William Parker and Marcus Shelby on basses, Kid Jordan on sax, wow. Val Mih was playing piano too.

Yesterday was at my rehearsal space and ran into Ralph from Freak Accident who was surprisingly working with bassist Mark Kennedy on a recording project. Mark was my first bass teacher and is a good friend. Surprising because Ralph is a punk rock god guitarist and Mark is a jazz player. Nice to see the genres breaking down.

    More soon. Peace,
    Eric

I want to learn Mandarin so I thought I'd make a little program to help. This is a prototype I'm working on to show stroke order and pronunciation. I'd like to include some video in it as well.

If anyone has suggestions or wants to help let me know. I think I mixed up some traditional and simplified characters. Only the first entries are working but there's a quiz you can try.

Today I'm working on getting my design web site back together, http://www.ejmarshall.com, I've been concentrating on music more lately. It''s been a while since I did any promotions for my design work and I even took my site offline for a while. I'll have some of my rock posters up soon. I've done posters for bands like the Grateful Dead, Weezer and Beck.

You can hear some of my recordings at http://www.eroksf.com. It's a foggy day in San Francisco and a good day to get some work done!
    peace,
    Eric

Last night we played over in North Beach in San Francisco at Dell"uva (http://www.delluvasf.com/), a wine bar. Todd Brozman was on keys and Rick Rivera on drums. Rick is one of my favorite drummers to perform with. He's originally from Boston and plays up on the beat with that east coast feel. We did a little demo recording a year ago.

My friend from Japan Ellie just left after staying in SF for a few days. She helped me study Japanese before I went to work in Tokyo a few years ago. I worked at a small web design firm near Shinjuku and lived in Asagaya. The good point about Asagaya was jazz "school" Manhattan. The school was really a bar where they gave lessons and had jam sessions late into the night. It was so small the bass player had to stand half way out the door to fit. i got a chance to go to a number of jazz sessions and do a few gigs in Tokyo. Hope to go back soon, I miss Japan. This is a picture of playing at jazz spot Fill-In.

A couple friends and I took Ellie to a San Francisco Giants baseball game. She yelled in surprise when a Keiichi Yabu, Japanese player, came up to bat. Folks from Osaka take their baseball seriously!

Hope I can get back to Japan soon.
