OK, folks, got lots of chores calling my name, but here's a quick one-off, and this is just for the AnD community.

My husband had a kidney stone last week, and I'm thankful. Not just because it was a small one and passed on its own, but because it got him in to the doctor. God bless him, he doesn't take very good care of himself. Well, Hubby is now borderline hypertensive, at 33, and the doctor has ordered him to quit smoking. (Not all of our family and friends know that he still smokes).

He's been prescribed Chantix, the newest and most effective smoking-cessation drug. And, I am working with him to reduce the cholesterol in his diet. I want him to be healthy enough to enjoy our boys, and the rest of our lives together.

Chantix is not covered by our insurance; the pharmacist told me that smoking-cessation drugs are considered "cosmetic." We agreed that that's ridiculous. So, this will be over $100 a month in an already stretched budget. But it may be the best money we've ever spent.

Let me send you some gross pictures of the side effects of smoking. Anxiety can also cause one to be hypertensive but smoking is the culprit behind heart and lung ailments.

You and your boys have the right not to be passive smokers too. O.K. I am being hard on him but it is for his own good. Will pray for him.

I know about 6 people who had great success with Chantix so I truly wish your husband the best.

(slaps on another nicoderm patch on her arm)

Yes these products are expensive but they DO help. That's the good news. :)

oh sweetie - just what you guys didn't need, hopefully this will help him give up, hopefully this Chantix is good and will help him give up quickly - how ridiculous that it is not covered.

Not only will his health be directly benefited from stopping smoking, but yours and your boys' health will improve, too! I'll go with him good luck! Thanks for the update.

I hope he will start taking care of himself. Good Luck to him with giving up smoking, with your support I'm sure he'll do it. I think Chantix should be covered...I can't believe they see it as "Cosmetic"!All the best to you an Jeremy.

I cannot believe insurance doesn't cover smoking-cessation Rx. That is totally mind-blogging. Viagra, yes. Non-smoking, no. Maybe in time. I wish him success!

my dad had kidney stones in recent years. he doesn't drink enough water, and he's a doctor, which is very silly. good your hubby's ok, and good he's quitting smoking. i quit a couple years ago, and it made me put on weight, but after a couple year adjustment, i'm working out a lot, etc. maybe he will, too, to substitute.

What a relief about that kidney stone. It's good that an edict came from the doctor for your husband to quit smoking. It's such a nasty and unhealthy habit. My husband used to smoke when we first met. It bothered me to no end and he started young too. I pleaded and begged and finally got him to quit but I know it was tough for him. I hope that the Chantix will will help Jeremy successfully rid his smoking habit. Money spent on bettering your health is ultimately so worth it.

As Roger Fan pointed out, I'm the first person from Cincinnati repping on AnD. Word! I'm a writer, connected to the Asian-American community through my Korean-born husband, our two hapa sons, and my lifelong interest in Asian cultures.

My work has appeared in periodicals, advertising, and children's curriculum, and I do a lot of writing for the web, but my dream is a career in film. I'm working on getting my first screenplay into production, and I have more ideas in the works as well. Creating good roles for Asian-American actors is something that's really important to me. I feel fortunate to give exposure to talented Asians in film by writing movie reviews for their films.

I blog for NINGIN, the Asian Media Exchange website. There you'll find the latest news and views on a variety of Asian and Asian-American artists. My interviews with Sung Kang, Roger Fan, and other fabulous people are posted at http://elena.ningin.com. When my work appears online, I might post a link to it on my AnD blog so you can check it out. But this is to add to your AnD experience, not direct traffic away from here. There's no place like AnD!
