Wow, remind me not to move back to the US! :-P

I don't think his portrait of how great it is to live in France is very accurate... I seem to recall them having a lot of riots and unemployment... and of course he doesn't talk about the tax rates in any of these countries... and his arguments rely a lot on anecdotes rather than hard facts (one thing i tend to dislike in a lot of people making outlandish claims about alternative medicine, etc)...

but if you ignore all that and focus on the main issue - that our health care system screws a lot of people and big business lobbyists have too much influence over our political process... its hard to argue with that (unless you're taking money from health care lobbyists!)

yes, on moore definitely "paints" all the stories WAY too good or too bad depending what he needed to guide the movie storyline... what do u think, living in europe is so easy with everything free? of course not...

on your last comment, i agree 90% with u IF the procedure is really proven to be experimental and not just considered experimental by some well-written clauses on those policies.

one example of how crazy this can get in a socialised medicine system, in spain, if a doctor signs that u need a sex change operation for medical reasons, even if they are only psichological, u get it for free! (paid from taxes of all working citizens!)

i think that this is going too far towards thinking in 'we' instead of in 'me' ;) but maybe i am wrong.

ha. yeah i think health insurance is definitely one of those things you assume works fine until you actually try to use it... :-P

one other thing i didn't necessarily like was Moore's use of stories about people who were denied experimental treatments...

i can't say I find it unreasonable that they're not willing to fund that. (just because the family is desperate enough to try anything doesn't mean the insurance company has to pay for anything and everything that is being researched but not yet proven.

if its an experimental procedure, whoever's paying for the research should pay for the procedure.

my god, just finished watching it. i feel very bad, rather not post in public what i feel :(

one thing, i hope my coworkers and other people i now see it, now they will understand why i complained so much during our change of insurance plan! instead of seeing me like a lunatic! not to mention the times during and after my knee surgery

p.s. if i would have gotten married in spain, i would have gotten 15 days of full salary as vacation! here, i am taking a combination of earned vacation days and unpaid leave to be able to take the next four weeks off..... :(

i had no idea he was using france to compare, u cannot compare countries like that (apples and oranges?). there is a big difference in approach of the whole country system, so u cannot just take what u like (i.e. the health system) from one and then install it in the other.

france /can/ be compared to spain but not to the US. definitely there are problems, unemployement, racial issues, riots, terrorism, etc, but there is no extreme poverty and the money is distributed more evenly (and the corporations and government agendas are less obvious).

the US health system, no matter how u see it, sucks royal arse, that is for sure! and in terms of taxes, spain, france, etc.. are about the same as the US... taxes go higher as u go east-north from there.
