    CURRENT RATINGS:
FRESH: 7/10  7/10 Movie: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

I remembered hearing good things about this film a few months back so I decided to watch it... I like a good western after all. After watching it though, i wasn't quite sure how I felt about it.

I guess its a good film, but, then again, it kind of annoyed me too... with its slow pacing for starters. Its long and relatively low energy for long stretches. Also it seemed like the director Andrew Dominick or maybe the cinematographer were trying to put as many 'artsy' shots in as possible: lots of waving wheat, lots of blurry images shot through glass windows, etc. After about 30 minutes of this i wanted to scream 'Stop tying so hard!' -- it gets distracting after a while.

Anyway, the story itself was kind of interesting... about how Jesse James' wild west robbery spree finally came to an end - but instead of being about a big shoot-em-up gun battle its more about the psychological tensions of dealing with a legendary criminal without getting shot first and then battling his legacy that lives on well after his death.

Interesting ...and with good performances (Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck), but the pacing and camera stuff kept me from really enjoying a lot (although its 2 hours and 40 minute run time did help pass most of my flight from Tokyo to HK...)

    I'll give it a 7/10.

That and I love how Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) basically portrayed the role of Jesse James' #1 fan.  About 30 min into the film and he really made you want to punch his obsessive whiny ass out.

Yeah, it was pretty good overall, esp with the performances.  Did you notice the disturbing tendency for men to be taking baths to suddenly have another man sneak up on them?

Oh if it's stayed true to the genre, I may give it a go, thanks.

I really liked the movie.  Casey Affleck turned in a real nuanced performance, sycophantic at the same time eaten alive by envy.  The pacing was purposefully slow.  You know from the beginning he gonna kill Jesse, it's kind of messianic, like Jesse knows it's coming too.  I didn't find it as visually stimulating as say Days of Heaven but it was beautiful.  3:10 to Yuma was good old western fun, but I'm a John Ford fan from way back, when just a few clips from Monument Valley were enough to make you know you were watching a Western.  All of it is classic stuff.  Too bad the Indians always get sucker punched in the end.   Russell Crowe is a wonderful wacko.

jason - yeah i meant 'traditional' in the sense that its not just a modern action film translated to the old west...

I would say Assasination of Jesse James is not a traditional western at all, and in fact, 3:10 Yuma does fit the classic western genre.

Also I think you'd enjoy the cinematography  and pacing a lot more on a big screen.  Or at least at home on a bigger screen in a relaxed atmosphere.  This is not a film who's visual elements can be appreciated on a tiny screen.  Hence all the comparisons of this film with Terence Malick's films.

On the other hand Yuma was entertaining with plenty of gun battles and can be enjoyed in on the small screen too.

This was my favourite film of 2007.  I think 10 or 20 years from now people will acknowledge that it's a masterpiece.

joanne - i haven't seen 3:10 to yuma, but this one is pretty 'traditional'...  pretty accurate historically I'm guessing.

I can't get into the modern westerns. I quite liked the 3:10 to Yuma remake, but I'm far too old-fashioned, preferring the likes of Pale Rider.

Yeah, I really wanna watch this one. But I don't like slow moving movies. Hmm.
