  • a different type of OCD?

Before showing my results of the OCD quiz (obsessive-compulsive disorder) from Patrick and Carmella's blog, let me say this... I admit I'm kinda OCD, despite my low score. Not so much a typical OCD who's a clean-freak or neat-freak, I'm more of a "Sanitation-Freak" and "Germaphobe"... I'm afraid of germs and get grossed out by the idea of touching anything that could be contaminated with germs and dirtiness in public places.

Examples of what I do (or don't do):
-One of the first things I do when I get home is wash my hands
-I press elevator buttons using my knuckles
-I don't touch public bathroom toilets
-I push open public bathroom doors with my elbows or feet
-I flush the toilets in public bathrooms with my foot if it's a handle
-I never touch public garbage lids with my bare hands (usually will use a napkin to open it) and will cringe at the sight of other people touching it with their hands
-I never wear shoes in the house to avoid trekking in dirt and sh*t from the streets (luckily this is a tradition in the Asian culture), but I cringe if guests walk around our house with shoes on. That's when I ask them to take their shoes off. =P
-I avoid touching poles on subway trains or buses unless absolutely necessary. If it's a turbulent ride, I'll reluctantly hold the pole with one hand, the whole time shuddering and cringing at the thought of nasty germs contaminating my hand....

I also hate the sticky or greasy feeling on my fingers! So if I have to eat with my hands like when eating fried chicken, french fries, and buffalo wings... or peeling oranges, I get really fidgety and the "ick" feeling stays in my mind until I can run to the nearest bathroom to wash my hands clean.

Am I weird?! Haha! Aside from this, I can be kinda messy. Just ask my husband, Mr. OCD Neat & Clean Freak himself! If he took this test, I bet he'd score very close to 100%!

I tend to do some of those things in a dirty urban area. Out in the wild, I'm less worried about it. L'enfer, c'est les autres.

Didja see my results on Patrick's blog?  The only one I didn't check was showering 3 times a day!  Yikes!

I do/don't do some of the things you listed....by the way, when you have to grab the pole in the bus/tram/train, hook it with the inside of your elbow...that way you don't actually have to TOUCH it!  haha!

woot, for being driven nuts by typos,  I hate making typos and force myself not to delete the comment.   I think I'm with Michael Chan though and would probably score lowly.  eek

We didn't think much of the shoe thing until your point was brought to us by Dorothy's sifu when he visited us one day. I didn't think I'm a germophobe, but I do do some of the things in your list...OK...gotta go wash my hands, I just had an apple.

Ivy! I do all the same things you listed!
    -  I press elevator buttons with the back of my hand or my 2nd set of knuckles (not the first set on my fingers - do u get it?), or I use clothing.
    -  I use my feet to push the toilet flush button,
    -  I squat above the public toilet seat - never touch, builds the thighs, ;D
    -  I wash my hands and then use my used towel to touch the door handle to open the door (if I can't push it open),
    -  I remove my shoes in the house (uh, most Asians do anyways),
    -  I avoid touching escalator rails, any public rails, if I can
    -  I don't carry any sanitizing wipes or gels but I often think I should
    -  I wash my hands constantly.

I just to avoid germs where I can. You and I can't be weird for doing these simple preventive measures.

Etchy-- I'm just glad I don't live in China, where projectile spitting/snotting on public streets is a way of life for some people. I'd never leave the house!

Joanne, Butter -- Yup, I've got the Purells in my purse whenever I remember to bring them. :)

There's nothing wrong with being a germophobe.    I do alot of the same things as you and I also scored a 72% on this thing.  Sounds like your hubby may have me beat though :P  Your apt. must be so clean and neat!   So do you carry wipes and Purell around with you?

I have noticed over the years that many have adopted the no shoes in the house rule...I am one of them...I also hate little plastic bits that fall off things...I don't like knowing that they may of been brought in on shoes, or chewed by someone. I think you act naturally especially in this day and age where sanitation is concerned.
Do you have the handbag sized no need to wash antiseptic handwash? It seems very popular here in the UK

i think you're just a normal germophobe then... not necessarily obsessive compulsive...

but the important question is - what are you doing in hong kong! :-P
