It's kind of a shame to me...
I don't know why the Chinese are so prone to bootlegging. Not only are we good at making it, but we also love consuming it. I personally do not, but it's literally everywhere here. Outside of Beijing and Shanghai, you simply cannot get anything legitimate. Even entire cars are bootleg! In a more developed area of town, I managed to get myself into a backroom that was filled with bootleg handbags. These exist in Chinatown NYC as well, but it was on a whole different level here. I noticed that even people who could very easily afford a real Prada handbag or D&G boots actually preferred the fakes. They revel in the negotiating. The screaming. The yelling. The shoving. Maybe I'm too harsh in saying it's a shame. But I do hate the fact that many Chinese do not see any value in design or craftsmanship. Many times, it's just about the facade. "This one has an Apple on it and it's $500. This one also has an Apple on it and it's $50. The choice is easy...why would I pay 10x more?" I believe in order for China to be really considered a cultural leader in this world, they have to figure out a way to get this mentality flushed out of their system. Right now, they're just the manufacturers of the world. "Tell me what to make and I'll make it. For less." No doubt that China is a financial powerhouse now because of it. That's fine but what about RESPECT? PRIDE? SUBSTANCE? If somehow, someone can come in and shed light on this and combine it with the positive attributes that the Chinese have (experience, diligence, perseverance) then they could really be something that changes the entire course of the planet.

It hasn't been that long since anyone but top party officials could afford to buy much of anything (and that much of anything was available for them to buy).  For people who grew up wearing standard issue Mao suits, cotton shoes and feeling like a king if they could afford a radio, fakes are really living high on the hog.  It has only been a generation since this was the reality for 98% of Chinese.  Perhaps that is also the reason for purchasing status objects (and if you can't afford the real stuff, the knock-offs are the next best thing).  Everyone tells them that China is an economic miracle, but people still see the gap between how folks live in Europe and the US (not to mention Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong) and how people, for the most part, live in China.

Hey Etchy, I agree with you about faking consumable items... some things are just not meant to be faked.

hmmm, another thing to consider is the cost.  i think most people in china make somewhere around $4,500USD *PER YEAR*.  so buying a $1,000USD handbag really isn't an option for them.  and even if they did save up and buy a real one, it'd probably get stolen from them....  =/

but no, i don't approve of fakes either.

Jeff, while I do not condone buying fakes, I'd like to offer a different perspective here.

Sometimes people who can afford the real designer items will also buy the fakes. Why? Because they can use the fakes on a daily basis and not worry about spoiling them, wear and tear, or even losing them.

The real genuine good stuff will only be used for special occasions or for occasions where you need to put your best foot forward.

If the designers want to cut into the fakes market, they will probably have to have a cheaper line that their regular customers can use on a daily basis.

Perhaps it is Asian mentality to want to save the good stuff for a really special or important time, simply because they cannot bear to use it everyday.

Or it could well be that some people invest in designer goods, and sell them off when they become vintage items that can no longer be found in the market, so obviously they will not want to actually use the items they buy, but to keep them in good to mint condition to get a better price in the future.
