OPENING RECEPTION: 7-9PM TUESDAY 10th FEBRUARY 2009
(09-01-2009) Hong Kong - Fresh from New York City, Jonathan Jay Lee has returned to Hong Kong to breathe new life into the local illustration scene, holding his first solo Hong Kong exhibition from February 10 to February 27 at the Fringe Gallery having worked in the U.S. for esteemed clients such as Marvel Comics.
“The illustration scene in Hong Kong is weak”, says Jonathan, “not because there aren’t a lot of creative people, but because clients aren’t willing to take risks with good ideas.” He believes that his exhibition will inspire and motivate viewers to venture into the illustrative unknown. Partnering with artist network Alive Not Dead, Hong Kong events organizer HK Clubbing, ultra-chrome printing specialists Giclee HK and monthly House event Opium Soul, artist Jonathan Jay Lee brings a new visual pleasure of aesthetic, with themes varying from Romance, Science Fiction, True Crime, Lonely Hearts to Zen Buddhism. "Hong Kong needs an illustrative kick in the ass," Jonathan observes, "Let's hope this event does just that."

About Jonathan Jay Lee
Fresh from New York to break into the local scene, Jonathan Jay Lee is an emerging artist whose work has been exhibited in three continents, displaying in Glasgow, New York City, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Graduating with Departmental Honors in Illustration from Parson’s The New School for Design in 2007, his résumé can already claim Marvel Comics, EMI’s Gold Label’ Record’s ‘Lady K’ for Kary Ng, cover and editorial illustration art for HK Magazine and Time Out. He has also illustrated for corporate brands under Pryde Group, a flash game for ElleGirl, work for non-profit Oxfam Tokyo, T-shirts for local band Audiotraffic, design and painting of the interior of Hong Kong’s own Club Sugar in Lan Kwai Fong, as well as storyboarding in New York City for James Buckley’s short film ‘The Model Maker’ starring Mark Margolis.
Jonathan Jay Lee’s work has been recognized internationally on the web and in print by the likes of Computer Arts Magazine, Alive Not Dead, Illustrophile, Galleri HK Magazine, MDX Publishing and Kitsune Noir to name a few, and is currently the visual brand behind Opium Soul. He was recently the subject of a British student’s A-level contextual study paper analyzing the approaches between traditional and digital methods of illustration. His work has been described by bloggers across the world as a mixture of Eastern and Western illustration styles.
Jonathan Jay Lee is currently learning to play the piano.
