• Raindrops keep falling on my head

  I consider myself a relatively observant person. My work takes me to Shanghai every now and then. On a recent trip, I noticed a number of “things that make you go hmmm…” to quote Arsenio Hall. On the exterior, Shanghai appears to be a modern metropolis with a thriving economy and cosmopolitan outlook that attracts a great number of foreign expats to settle. As the host of the 2010 World Expo, officials are hard at work to achieve a facelift for the city by improving city infrastructures. Once you have spent some time roaming the streets and meeting the locals, you will realize it has a long way to go before being considered modern.
  
  The top item on my list is of course the constant barrage of spitting noises you hear while walking down the street. As an experienced spit-dodger, I would suggest the following evasive action. The spit is a 2-part process; the initial clearing of the throat, followed by the actual spit. Always look around as soon as the throat-clearing thrust is heard then move to an open area to avoid contact. On the other hand, if you spot the perpetrator, move as fast as humanly possible beyond his firing range! Hiding behind bystanders always works. I have become quite an expert in the spit-dodging game. Thankful to say I’m yet to be sniped. An idea comes to mind when considering the popularity of this repulsive habit. Why not have a national contest? There can be a variety of events such as long spit, high spit, viscosity, and accuracy. The possibilities are endless! I always believe that if you do something long enough, you’re sure to get good at it; a case in point. However I believe the spectacle will only work on the national level since it would be hard-pressed to find worthy opponents from the rest of world!
