  • Building for Bacolod

I recently got back from volunteering in Bacolod, Philippines with
ICM and Gawad Kalinga.  We spent most of our time building hous-
    ing
for those living in the slum areas and I cannot stop raving
about how amazing the experience has been.

The Filipinos we worked with were so hospitable and friendly,
despite living on less than 1USD per day.  Their joy and laughter
was contagious and I couldn't help but feel so blessed to be in
    their company.

We built a house, mixed cement by hand, visited a TB clinic, prayed
for those suffering from special medical cases, did arts and crafts with
kids in the preschool, had Dunkin' Donuts, sang and danced with the
youngins living in the slums, ate a lot of chicken inasal and loved and
    cared unconditionally.

I think the most beautiful part of this trip was the sense of community
these people had and the love they had to give.  By the fourth day of
construction all the people had come out to help build from the young
to the old.  And although there were 22 of us on our team, the locals
managed to remember our names from day one.

It was difficult to leave after the farewell they gave us, tears were flowing,
bear hugs and embraces were given. We sang and danced in the darkness
and though we were covered with dirt and standing on garbage, it was
the least of our concerns because we were all so overwhelmed with
    emotion.

There are some amazing changes happening in these families and in the
communities there.  I'm excited to see how GK & ICM's vision will impact
the poor and give hope to a nation.

Many rich people say: The world needs to make people in poor countries have few children. According to this thinking, there would be so much devastation on the planet. Rich people forget that a rich kid consumes the equivalent of fourteen children poor. Rich kids consume too much. You do well to help these people who have not had the luck to be born in rich families. In my country there are families living in very bad conditions, as you can see the "trailer" of the film documentary: "garapa" on youtube.
