  • The city's intimacy

    2008-11-25 1:58AM / 標準BLOG

Modern transportation allows us to fly cross nations and cities, it is not only an extension our physical ability, but also redefine our relationship with different cities. In the phenomena of modern time, people becomes nomads by constantly moving from one place to the other, consequently, one can perceive different  cities as numbers of  "she" throughout the life time.

The very first city we met was the one who gave birth to you, she told you what the world is like before your conscious grow. As you got older and start learning, the city became a teacher who makes you realize the world are much bigger then "her".

Being alone with city and walk along with her have been such an intimate experience. She talks to you along the way, tell you stories about  what is happening to her. Like a date, sometime you would feel uncertain or insecure with her, you can never see the full side of her, that is what keeps me exploring each autonomous space and collaging fragments of each discontinuous memory about her.

  • MAD in Beijing

    2008-09-21 1:33AM / 標準BLOG

My life has greatly changed in the pass 2 months. Struggled through packing and selling all my stuff in Melbourne and brought nothing but lovely momeries back to hong kong. It was like rewinding a video when I was packing and throwing away my stuff, from nothing to something, and from somthing back to the start. I have thrown away more then 8 huge "Red White Blue" bags of stuffs, and it really made me realise that I can never bring all the stuff that I through I own, neither in time nor space.

Letting things go is probably the main intention of leaving Australia, and such decision has been made for a while, the only thing I was not sure is where should I go next, thought of going to Germany, Uk, etc.... until I sent my folio and CV to a architecture firm named MAD in Beijing, they replied me and gave me the next step.

Its my third week in Beijing, things are going pretty well here. Started to work on the 3rd day after I arrived, and dont even have time to look around as a tourist.

MAD is a fairly new architecture firm, our boss Yansong Ma is one of the hottest young architect in world, his designs are all bond and loud. He believes that the idea of  'Modern Box' are no longer appropriate for contemporary living, not even for fish. Thus he has designed a fish tank base upon the movement of fish.

Here is the website if you wannt know more about MAD

  • DJ Shadow

    2008-07-26 4:10AM / 標準BLOG / Music

Still remember picking up the discount album in HMV when I was 13,  it changed my whole perception of what music can be. As a boy grown up in hk, all I knew was pop music singing love or die all day long, and I never realize there are some much wiser musical phenomenons out there until I hear DJ Shadow. From the first time I listen to Organ Donor, I was hooked and since then I listen to every album from this man, Unkle album, Private Press, and The Outsiders.

I really like the idea of sampling and mixing different people's stuff to create your own thing. I guess because it is so DIY to me. Its not about being professional or expert at something, but trying new things and being inventive to get your creativities across. I know that his last album Outsider wasn't exactly sample based, and that is why I sort of feel that there is something miss in the album. It sounds too crisp and clean which loss the raw and roughness of  sampling. I know hes trying to new stuff, and i believe that even it doesn't work this time, it doesn't mean he won't blow me away again in the future.

This is a illustration of "6 Days", where the lyric goes "You could be sitting taking lunch
The news will hit you like a punch"

    Newport Art Centre

This project seeks new methods to reactivate the post-industrial site of the 19th Century Newport Railway Workshop in Melbourne. Declining industrial activity in the area has been replaced by suburban residential development. These adjacencies have given rise to unique and alternative uses of existing built infrastructure in the former industrial areas.

Building upon the existing character, the project proposes new programs and built structure that are inserted into existing old factories, developing the former industrial area into an Arts Centre for Newport. The program sought not only to engage the public through the exhibiting of art, but also enable production processes to be experienced by providing different spaces of inhabitation through which various disciplines could meet and exchange ideas.

Portions of the existing building were removed to accommodate the new program, while transparent materials and various pop-out spaces were inserted to provide potential interaction to two pedestrian corridors. The corridors are proposed as the site of interaction between the different users and their vocations. The corridors are covered by a canopy that carefully wraps around the existing heritage towers at either end of the complex, framing points of entry, while providing a moment of continuity that acknowledges the corridors role as a site of conversation.

The proposed Newport Arts Centre is a site of interaction, accommodating different users and disciplines in an open conversation regarding the act of making in relation to a community identity.

Since the semester is over, i hv plenty of time. Beside sleeping and facebooking i really have nothing to do but drawing and painting.
Been going to this life drawing class in Collingwood for 3 months so far, starting to feel abit more comfortable with the speed, as in the begining i could only draw the outline and didnt even hv time to do any shading.
