Hey guys, I wanted to start off with an apology to many of my personal and online friends... Many of you know I’ve been out of reach for awhile now, life is speeding up in many unknown directions and is proving to be challenging both physically and mentally…

    TODAY’S PROBLEM

As adolescent as it may sound, I am spending my days looking for some grander purpose. I am revisiting old skills as well as developing many new ones. I am reading, writing and exploring the world with more interest than before. In my external practice, training and exercise has never been this easy for me. I feel faster, stronger and more powerful, yet mentally I am feeling a bit lost.

    Routine, Routine, Routine…

I often ask myself, “why do I get up to train everyday?” The simple answer would be “to improve,” But I’m realizing that I am not sure in what I would like to be better. I can always be faster, I can always be stronger, but as time passes and I am left an old man, how much of these physical skills will stay with me? Thinking about this, I remember a teacher who told me, “Philip let your body die, Because where the body fails your mind will prevail.” Now as crazy as that sounds I feel this statement was very useful because it was the first time I was told to let go of the physical side of things and let my mind take over, I think this is what I am missing in today’s practice, training of the mind.

    MARTIAL ARTS

In the pursuit of martial arts, one would be lucky if they were to come across three levels. The first is to fight and to win, the second is to fight and to win with minimal effort, and the third, to fight without fighting. I will not go into details as to the various meanings of these three stages but I will say that at it’s highest levels martial arts is protecting, empowering and mystical in it’s practice. It should not be used to fight nor to defend, but to purify yourself and strengthen yourself beyond the need to be even be tempted into an altercation. Now with that being true we must remember that as human beings we can all hurt somebody, if not damaging with our fists, we can damage with misplaced words, and unspoken feelings left in our heart and as these battle's of words are also types of altercations we should be extremely conscious of our involvement....

    TOMORROWS AWARENESS

As a martial artist I do not study to merely fight, I study to be aware of various situations and to bring an end to those that will eventually lead to pain and hardship. Today I feel the most important thing for myself is to train and develop a mental awareness over my actions and identify how they can potentially effect and hurt others. So many times in the past I have avoided fighting outside or hurting someone in the ring only to pick an unnecessary argument with a friend or to say hurtful things to loved ones and this trend is quite disturbing to me, and I will continue to work on it…
    __________________________..____________

Anyways, Blah blah blah. I wanted to take this time to share some thoughts with all of you and soon I will publish a collection of writings that I have found somewhat helpful on my own journey. Of course we all have our own ideas of what “helpful” may be, but nonetheless, thank you for reading.

Man, I missed this blog earlier, too!  I was really busy at the beginning of Sept though...not a lot of time on AnD.

3 Levels of Martial Arts:  Just watch Jet Li's "Fearless."  Very awesome!  I strive daily to smooth over the wrinkles and frictions between those who don't necessarily like my lifestyle and I don't understand theirs as well.  Mutual respect is a difficult undertaking but well worth the work if achieved.

How does one as young as you already have the mind of someone much older and wiser?

It appears you and I are somewhat in the same boat--feeling the pull of greater purpose. Something I've found that have been helpful--step outside your comfort zone and engage whom ever is there. If you're not finding your answers within your sphere, and they aren't in places you've been before, they must be elsewhere. Step outside your sphere. The unknown can be terrifying, uncomfortable at the very least, but also very rewarding. Ignore logic, what does you heart say?
