The fortunate person learns that true happiness in life can be achieved only through constant dedication to disciplined habit in daily living. Only when a person is able to willingly undertake a pattern of living in which he deprives himself of all excess, can he find a content and balanced life, and his function on earth can said to be fulfilled.
    -Koun Suhara

To completely heal a person, acupuncture, herbs, and these other modalities are only one aspect of the treatment. You must also come into synchrony with the patient in many other ways. For example, when patients lack the confidence to conquer illness, they allow their spirits to scatter and wither away. They let their emotions take control of their lives. They spend their days drowned in desires and worries, exhausting their Jing (Essence) and Spirit.
-The Yellow Emperor (206 BCE) (Art of Medicine)

Thoughts of desire, fame and profit are all human emotions, ones that often arise easily. It is not virtuous to indulge in them. To restrain these emotions, one should use the method of “subduing the self.” Subduing oneself is difficult, we must summon sufficient willpower and not relent for a moment. We can maintain control over these emotions by being aware of their signs when they first arrive. This is the “method of subduing the self” if one determines to pursue learning and love what is right, thoughts of fame, profit and material goods will weaken. If heavenly principles advance, human desires retreat.

In martial arts, deliberate speed and spontaneous speed have completely different energetic results. Deliberate speed drains energy, while spontaneous speed conserves energy. Deliberate speed narrows attention by focus on intent while spontaneous speed frees attention by unleashing unmediated response. This is the Action of Spark and Stone
    -Takuan Soho

The reality of the mind has no form but pervades in the ten directions. In the eyes it is called seeing, in the ears hearing, in the nose it smells, in the mouth it speaks, in the hands it grips, in the feet it steps. Basically it is a single spiritual light, differentiated into a six fold combination. Once the whole mind is nothing you are liberated wherever you are. In the martial arts, this practice is applied to the attainment of responding to events spontaneously as they arise, without getting thrown off balance anywhere, mentally, energetically, or physically.
    -Zen Master Linji

Treading on water is just like treading on land, and treading on land is just like treading on water. The meaning of this will not be known by anyone unenlightened about the very source of mankind.

I think I need to write down the 2 quotes from Takuan Soho and Zen Master Linji and review them before my taiji class.  Good stuff, Philip!  Thanks for sharing these great bits of wisdom.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with Koun Suhara to some degree. Purging excess is only a great beginning. I believe true happiness is achieved through taking our in-born and achieved--be it through some sort of training or something earned like a degree or income--God-given gifts and using them to serve others, then we will know happiness. Giving from what we have and what where we excel beings joy  because we are doing exactly what we were made for.
