hmm, was randomly thinking about this the other day. if you had super speed (like the flash or the girl in heroes), wouldn't you also have/need the following superhuman powers:

super stamina - they are always running from city to city, state to state, continent to continent. even if they are way faster than the rest of us, they are still running huge distances. they'd still need major stamina to do that, right?

super perception - if they are running as fast as a bullet, they'd need to be able to perceive things while moving at that speed. if everything was just a blur to them, they'd likely end up running into a tree and dying. so.... if they have super perception, then even if they weren't running around, if they saw a hummingbird, could they see its wings?

super reflexes - in addition to being able to perceive things moving at super speeds, wouldn't they also need super reflexes to avoid running into trees, people, etc?

higher level of resistance to cold - if they are really moving at that speed .... it would be pretty cold for them, especially on chilly days. imagine riding on a motorcycle, but at like 5-10 times that speed. so, they'd probably have to have a much higher than normal resistance to cold.

higher damage resistance - you'd also figure that even with super reflexes, they'd run into the occasional bug or stone shot out the back of a car. if they are running at that speed, the stone might kill a normal person. even the bug would probably hurt a great deal. so i imagine they'd probably need to have higher than normal damage resistance to sustain that.

err .... ok, ya ... just very random thought that i wanted to type out! haha. see you all at the anniversary party tomorrow.

I have come to a conclusion about you. You think too much.

But um, yeah, you're right. You'd also need to have all your clothes be protected against windsheer and friction.

If anything is "super-sized," then everything else must follow suit.  If a person has all of those super qualities, then they need a super supper (ha!) in order to maintain the output needed to sustain their super powers.

One super power that I think was overlooked is the super ability to be able to repair the super wear and tear on one's super body.  The metabolism must be super....the sleep-phase must be super....

But, after everything is super, is there any other goal?  Can one strive to be super-duper fast?  Super-duper perception?  Super-duper bug resistant?  This is a question of monumental superness...kind of an endless eternal loop (play on words from the olden days of learning computer languages like COBOL)....

I'm only watching season 1 now and you have ruined it for me by revealing the power of some girl I don't know about yet. Ha ha. Interesting post, as usual. If nothing else, I would love to see Superman hit a bug or two someday. That would be funny. His suit must be coated in Bug-Away or something. Super speed must also require super stitching on their clothes. Man, the more you think about it, the list goes on and on.

Speed is a function of time. If the runner's power is to slow down everyone else, then s/he wouldn't need those extra powers.

Thanks for sharing that, hehe. That's all quite true, although it never really popped into my head at all until you blogged about it =p I guess great powers do come along with great responsibilities.

They'd need super skin so it isn't all stretched out when they're moving in super speed. Maybe "higher damage resistance" goes under super skin. Also, super skin would enable them to talk better.

actually..carrying on with the Twilight theory.. yea.. its really the human vs superhuman thing.. according to the book... those vampires are just.. i don't know.. super .. sensitive to everything I guess. Like speed is barely anything to them... running that fast... its' like us walking!!

I saw a show once where a college professor taught based on the physics of super heros. They would look at each hero, discuss his/her super powers and figure out if that person really existed, would he really have those abilities based on the laws of physics. I guess the class was always packed. Anyhoo, they figured out that Spiderman was possible, but the Flash was not based mostly on the amount of food the guy would have to consume to maintain that kind of activity. They figured he'd have to eat huge quantities, almost continuously. He'd have to eat more than DY! ALL THE TIME =O
