so i went to the bank today around 3pm to try to get a cashier's check.  walked all the way down from my place (about 10 minutes) in the scorching heat and it turns out the the bank was closed!   turns out it's closed on sundays too.

this got me thinking ... why is it that banks are basically only open during the times people work?  isn't that really inconvenient for anyone other than business banking customers?  wouldn't it make more sense to have banks open til late (say, 5pm) on saturdays and be open all day on sundays as well?  otherwise you have to get off of work to do any personal banking outside of withdrawing money.

another business that should be open when people are off work are barbers.  at least around here, almost all the ones i know are closed around 7pm (i did find one that was open til 8pm).  if anything, it'd almost be better to not even open during the day, but instead open at night from like 3pm-10pm plus all day on the weekends.  after all, going to the barber is something normal people do when they get off of work, right?

the answer to your questions: because no-one wants to work those hours when everyone else is off work - unless they are paid more to do so. if the barber then ups his prices during these hours then general public would say "geez its cheaper if i sneak out of work and do it then" and they'll end up doing that instead... see what i mean?

I made the same comment a while ago.

Same thing with doctors. Its quite frustrating to take time off work to go sort things out!

Singapore is good, some banks open till 8pm and are also open on Sundays. The ATM and quick check drop boxes are available 24 hours, so if you just want to bank in a cheque no queues just drob it into the quick check box. Cheque clearance very fast too, it drob before 2pm checks will be cleared same day. In many cases, there are always long queues at the bank so there are waiting time.

Barber shops, yes.  Banking hours harder b/c it has a lot to do w/ TIME in general.  There are international standards on cut-offs for deposits, loans, equities, etc., etc.  Although to us, it seems the bank just needs to keep the lights on and hire a few people for a few extra hours, in fact, there are a bunch of deadlines in offshore places with weird names like Jersey (not New Jersey) that actually affect Hong Kong banking hours.  They need to revamp the whole system and make it 24-hours Foxconn style...

I think barbers make most of their money doing the hairs of rich women who don't need to work during the day, so all the do is get hair treatments, go to spas and going shopping. I guess business open in the hours they make the most money (banks too), opening only at times where they're highest paying customers come in. Opening till later only gives you a bunch of guys who want cheap hair cuts which i guess is much worth their time.

It's easy enough to try it for one night a week to see how it works out.  There's a local bank with late weekday hours and weekend hours.  Everyone else is trying to follow suit.

    Post office too.

So are you considering an new business venture, Pat? At least the barber shop anyway...? Hair cuts for the hip, after hours, night owl crowd. Adorn the walls with AnD artist's work, a coffee counter, tat artist in back... we got a couple of them here @ AnD too. There's a hair place here that caters just to men. Sells beer and serves it while you're getting shorn.
