been listening to the top tracks from the united kingdom on spotify the last few weeks.

one thing i've noticed is there are a TON of artists using a lot of autotune in their songs.  here are the ones i've found just within the top 50.  and these are just the ones that are using autotune in an obvious way (think cher's "if you believe").

    1) dynamite - taio cruz
    3) club can't handle me - flo rida featuring david guetta
    9) dj got us fallin in love - usher featuring pitfull
    20) commander - kelly rowland
    21) ridin solo - jason derulo
    31) i like it - enrique iglesias
    32) one (your name) - swedish house mafia featuring pharrell
    34) beautiful monster - ne-yo
    35) take it off - ke$ha
    37) gettin over you - david guetta featuring fergie & lmfao
    38) frisky - tinie tempah featuring labrinth
    40) missing you - the saturdays
    41) omg - usher featuring will.i.am
    42) bang bang bang - mark ronson & the business intl
    44) what if - jason derulo
    45) bad romance - lady gaga
    46) waka waka (this time for africa) - shakira featuring freshlyground
    50) start without you - alexandra bruke featuring laza morgan

i'm not necessarily saying it's bad.  i actually like a number of these songs.  just that it's really gotten pervasive these days.  and with autotune, the music producer becomes a lot more important the singer -- since they can literally make anyone sound good now.  and on that same note, with autotune you can't even really tell what someone really sounds like anymore!  everyone sounds like t-pain with autotune....

in contrast, i'm really digging this one song (and band) i found on the top lists on spotify ---

    islands by xx.

no autotune (i think).  love it!  the girl's voice is so nice.  you'll need to look it up on youtube or somewhere else.  i can't access youtube from china so i can't find the video for it.

I like the natural-sounding The XX too. One reason the state of today's pop is annoying to me is the overprocessed sounds they've created - the other that everyone's adding rap bits. All just a mash of computerization and bass and rap. Nobody needs to be a good singer anymore to hit it big commercially....

It's a bit of a fashion/style statement these days to have that autotune "sound" in your song if you are making a song in pop/dance genre.  (Seriously, a naked natural voice isn't best suited for high energy music)  I agree with you that 85% of the work now rests with the producer.  But I think for the same reason many artists' albums now contain this type of songs as well as a few more "normal" or "unplugged" style songs where they can showcase their raw talents.

In a live situation, I know the Korean singers typically blend the live voice with a metallic sounding autotune-effected recording.  The results are good if everyone sings in time and in tune.  Otherwise it's just sounds very messy.

Pat, I also have the similar issues with overmiking Broadway plays and musicals.  Now anyone can perform on Broadway.  You used to have to have a trained voice.  Now it's populated with TV and movie actors.  Not really intimate anymore.

What do they do in live performances then?  Someone is there to autotune?  I keep hearing excuses for bad performances on awards shows by popular performers.  That's just lame.  I don't care if the autotuning is obvious obvious---then it's just an effect, not a concealment.  But others?
