I am back from the 2008 Inside Film (IF) Awards in Australia! I received a nomination for best unproduced screenplay, and got teleported from negative zero degree temperatures in Beijing to swimming in Surfers Paradise.
Highlights:
Sitting next to Rebel Williams, the best actress in my opinion in "Ghost Rider" She plays the punk at the beginning who gets interviewed by a TV crew and says "His head - was on fire"! Great stuff.
Meeting a very cool taxi driver from Paraguay who is determined to "go bush" and leave civilization behind. After the rather "look at me, look at me" awards it was nice to just get in a cab with a down-to-earth dreamer.
Seeing how a teleprompter works; those things are scary, especially when they are going at the wrong speed and they have to rewind to re-cue during a live telecast. I suddenly could see why George Bush takes so long to finish his sentences. Just blame it on the teleprompter.
Seeing one of the guest lecturers from my university days at the Victorian College of the Arts SSCA doing the audience warm-ups before the broadcast. Enormously energetic speaker, remember his classes very fondly.
Successfully transporting my suit from China to Australia: first carry-on on the plane (via Singapore), then on a city train from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, then on a public bus from the outer Gold Coast to Surfers Paradise. The fact that the suit didn't arrive as paper mache is a miracle.
