Back in spring 2007, Gu Tao, an Inner Mongolian photographer and documentary director, approached me with 25 hours of DV footage he'd shot that he wanted edited. The footage was in-your-face, confronting, at times bordering on the insane: it followed a nude performance artist in Beijing who would remove all his clothes in public spaces to shocked bystanders.
Gu Tao had spent months following the life of nude performance artist Qin Yongjian. At the time I had a tiny edit suite in the 798 Art Factory, and Gu Tao was helping run the "& Artlab" gallery next door to my cubicle/office. We watched the footage together rather sheepishly at first, this was pretty heavy stuff, not your typical TV documentary. Over the next month I edited the raw footage into the movie "Starkers: The Naked Life of Qin Yongjian". Gu Tao had a friend who was in a rock band, so they provided the music. Gu Tao was a great director to work for, laid back yet passionate, driven solely by the desire to create art and nothing else. Turns out the film's been doing the festival circuit in Europe and the States, where it recently picked up an award.

Gu Tao also directed an excellent movie about the Ewenkis tribe of Xing’ an Mountain, it's called "Aoluguya, Aoluguya". Definitely worth a look if you can.
