  • Sengoku Basara ep 1 and 2

Have i mentioned how much i love historical fiction. No, i obviously haven't. Well, I do.

Sengoku Basara, based of a video game, known to the english speaking world as 'Devil Kings', takes historical fiction, mixes it with generous helpings of kick-ass fight sequences, heavily embellished with energy generating auras and whatnots, and then serves with copious amounts of great animation and direction. In short - I like.

For math aficionados, such as myself, let me present that in an easier to understand equation format:

RISK(The board game) + Japanese Sengoku Era History and Personalities from that Era + Large Amounts of Kick-assery = Sengoku Basara

    In short - I like.

So basically this series is set during the Sengoku Era (read: Warring States Period), where everyone who is anyone in Japan is basically trying to kill everyone else who is anyone else and take over the whole country. The person achieving this the quickest is the Devil King himself, Oda Nobunaga (read: Bad Ass Motherfucker).

The series starts off with the events leading to a face-off, and the face-off itself, between The One-Eyed Dragon, Date Masamune (read: One Eyed Bad Ass Cool Dude), and Sanada Yukimura (read: Slightly Gay Two Eyed Bad Ass). They match each other and strength, and as animes normally go, develop a fierce rivalry. They even share opposing colours, Blue for Masamune and Red for Yukimura. After a Bad Ass fight sequence where the collective shit of a hundred people hits the fan, they both part ways reluctantly due to something or the other( I was not paying attention at this time due to having my brains blown away).

There are more memorable characters, such as Uesugi Kenshin (a very very effeminate samurai), and his rival, Takeda Shingen (a very very un-effeminate viking sort of Japanese). Also introduced are two ninjas, Sarutobi Sasuke, who works for Shingen, and Kasuga, a kunoichi completely in love with Kenshin, who wears the kinda clothing I like - the revealing kind. As with all animes, all the female characters are endowed with assests that defy all reason. Not that I'm complaining.

More characters and badasses are also revealed, along with a geriatric Hojo, who meets his end fairly quickly.

On the whole art and concept is good. Fight scenes are exaggerated to the point of sheer insanity, but in a cool way. You know, to each his own...
