This picture has stayed with me all day. I kept thinking about it and re-imagining it (since I couldn't access it at work). Now that I see it again, my impression that it is brilliant is confirmed. Just as I remembered, there is this very charged space created by Wing's gaze as he studies a life-sized photograph of Terence, and the camera has caught him in a moment of reverie. There is something very pregnant in the (physically) empty space between the photographer and the photograph. It is charged with thought and emotion and tells us so much about the subject. This is a wonderful example of a portrait that shows us something about the inner life of the sitter.
