Polish Up The Language

i'm WAAAAAY behind any DW movie...but i just watched Protégé yesterday, and one thing i found out bout DW acting is that–he needs to polish up his cantonese. sometimes i just couldn't get what he was saying, i had to turn on subtitle. that is when it hit me on what really makes me get 'into' a movie while watching.

of coz it is different if it's a foreign language movie. i HAD to read subtitle. BUT! i still like to have the volume up that i can listen to whatever language the character is speaking. it really makes a difference watching it silent and reading subtitle compare to listending even though i don't understand and reading subtitle. or maybe i'm just someone who like noise!??

as for a movie with language i understand, listening to the movie makes it more realistic. like i'm listening to a conversation instead of watching a conversation. andy lau is great. reason, of cause is his countless years of experience in acting, but i really think the point is the way he speak. i think one get more 'into' the character if the actor can speak the language well. i'm not saying DW is a disaster...but he needs to really get into the cantonese 'slang' or whatever makes him look more 'canto'. (i have NO IDEA how to explain...but hope you all can understand)

another example, i just watched Blood Diamond (i'm in my movie mood now ) and leonardo di caprio tried a more challenging role, speaking as an african american (i believe. it just doesn't motivate me to watch as soon as he speaks...so i'm not really paying attention. but hoping it is a good example for anyone who had seen blood diamond). well, it was a disaster. he sound more like a southerner than an african. so...no point given to that movie.

as for johnny depp, he is good in acting, i totally agree. but notice the way he speaks. it is ALWAYS the same (aside from Edward Scissors' Hand, which he didn't speak much) 'slang' he had. even in Pirates Of The Carribean, yes, he is very successful in his role, but still you can catch his 'famous'/signature voice/slang when he speaks. same goes in Charlie The Chocolate Factory, or even Blow. in Chocolate, a little bit different but still...he know how to pick his role, and master it. yet, i still catch that he speaks the same in every movie. BUT NO ONE IS PERFECT! so far, he is STILL my favorite actor despite me kinda notice his signature speaking skill.

back to Protégé, storyline interesting. but i think what really make the heat in such storyline is Infernal Affair (neither Infernal Affair 2 nor 3). the first ever. i think that's when HK movie hit the high point. Protégé seems to have the same 'undercover' storyline. what interest me most is the part where the movie inform about the drug business/world that's going around. it won't make any effect to anyone i believe but still, it's good information to open up our 'eyes' to the world of drugs.

to me, speaking the language fluently as your role in acting is as important as emotional expression or any important point in acting. i'm not in acting classes or anything, but i'm expressing it out from an audience point of view.
