New York Philharmonic new graphic identity design by Paula Scher of Pentagram (blog).
another new logo design announced. thanks to Logo Design Love (www.logodesignlove.com), i'm caught up with some of the latest logo make-over out there! here is my few cents of comments on this new logo.
to start off, the above is the old logo. according to LDL, the issue with this is the legibility of the type intersecting with the red graphic lines. agree.
reason for the new design/identity is to celebrate the arrival of new music director, Alan Gilbert.
from Pentagram blog: The Philharmonic’s institutional identity has a built-in flexibility that can accommodate the varied needs of the organization. The two elements—the circular wordmark and the line graphic—may appear together or apart, in multiples, rotated or layered, to create patterns of line and shape. The line of the baton may be used as a decorative motif or to set apart blocks of information.
i understand the choice of a baton as a symbolic graphic. but i REALLY don't get the circular wordmark type setting. the design choice made me feel as if i went back in time when one is all excited about tht 'oh so cool' type effect available in Illustrator.
personally, i'm a big 'typography' person. i see the essence and beauty of each typeface created. i always believe the beauty can be bring out without any adjustment if one sees the 'inner beauty', the careful curve, thick and thin design being selected to be dress on the typeface. of course this beauty doesn't apply to ALL typeface available out there, but some of the classic fonts like Baskerville, Gill Sans, Garamond, Caslon...etc. not those on www.dafont.com. those are graphic typeface. i have nothing against it, i just think this could have been a more professional design if the type choice is carefully selected.
however, i believe one other factor came to the picture for the type choice. i call it, animation? you can see lots of recent design is closely tie to 'movement', an animation. you can see the design decision is possibly influence by tht factor through the flash logo animation right when you landed on the blog page. the type adjustment enhance the movement. also, the factor of 'logo as part of a pattern' is highly influence in most of today's logo design. check out the application below.
i can understand the stationery application...but THE IPOD? WHAT???? this just shout out 'we did logo for the money, the market!!!' to me. seriously...when does iPOD become an element to be consider for a logo design??? or am i just stuck in my own time portal of classic logo design aesthetic? a logo tht is beautiful to be on its own, yet able to apply to various application beauty?
the above invitation card is the only piece i felt the identity/logo function beautifully in its 'graphic' application. the rest...i don't feel it. esp the banner. *shrug*
i don't have a fanatic craze on who's the famous designer out there, nor do i keep track of any designer's work. i don't follow the trend? call me ignorant. i admit. don't know how to put it but this one, it says a lot to me tht the success is base on the 'who' tht design it. or i'm just not a fan for Paula Scher?
none of the logo she design really attracts me with a 'wow' factor. thus, i'm sure she's good at selling it to the client. presentation skills. people skills. i need to learn tht FOR SURE!! I NEED TO LEARN MORE, PERIOD!! but i can confidently say, this new design doesn't work! just like the new Pepsi new identity!!!
oh, one more, Duane Reade! don't even want to go there!!! thus, thanks anne for sharing! check it out here - iaminlikewithme.tumblr.com. my 'summary' comment on tht, it's a design disaster. *ashame*
one note to self: stick to the real meaning of a logo design. the timeless beauty with the right spirit and soul. the solid body, not just about the money market.
or am i just not open to the 'change' tht's happening now?
i love the classic for sure. Herb Lubalin, Jan Tschichold, Josef Muller Brockmann...to name a few. *heart*
interesting... I actually did a research paper on Paula Scher... she is rather interesting... but i don't know about this new logo that she did... *eek* I like it with the use of color in the stationary... but hmm... the others? not too sure...
